T3, 60 trim .63/.60 ar's with a stage 3 wheel ;). Most t3/t4's are just too big and produce sad results for such a low power level. If you don't believe me take a close look at the maps for a standard "50 trim" t3/t4 @ 10psi vs. the cfm flow demands of your motor for the hp number you want to make. They run so far off the efficiency island it's not even funny.

Yeh fair enough , I just hope he doesn't end up buying a t25 or a 14b lol
So hvacrdan .. as slo_crx1 said go for the T3, 60 trim .63/.60 ar's with a stage 3 wheel
What are you planning for fuel management?

The 63/60 t3 60trim will work. and it's a good one to have if engine buildup and/or vtec head are in the plans. it's easily upgraded into a 400 hp t3/t4.

but for a STOCK b18B and no more than 10 psi, i say the .48/.60 t3 60 is better. it spools up faster.

Chances are the turbo and manifold are going to be junk. The wastegate and bov might not be too bad but you'll have better luck collecting the parts yourself. Start hitting up the junkyards in your area. I got my turbo and bov from an old volvo and ended up costing me only fifty bucks. :)

only one turbo comes .48/.60 a/r 60 trim from the factory. It's the Ford 2.3L thunderbird/turbocoupe (and maybe other varations of the same engine)

Of course, since used junkyard turbos from the 80's ALL need a rebuild prior to be re-used anyways :y, You can pick ANY automotive T3 from a Saab, volvo, renault, peugeot, nissan or mercedes... They usually have a small .42 a/r 40, 45 or 50 trim compressor, and simply send it to any turbo shop to have it rebuilt + upgraded to a t3 .48/.60 60 trim or even a small t3/t4. Some shops are apparently cheaper than others and warranty their work for 6 months. Just Look around. O0

Re: picking best turbo for b18b

Do a search to confirm but the turbo coupe was made from 83-88. I believe ford stoped using the garrett 48/60 for 1987/88 and switched over to the ihi which is smaller.

48/60 was also offered on some mercedes too, have no idea which specifc models/years.

BLAAST 04-17-2007 08:04 PM

Re: picking best turbo for b18b

Yeah, maybe mercedes did but it'S an odd ball turbo with all kinds of weird flanges. The special edition GNX also had a .60 compressor that's even larger than 60 trim. It's basically a t4 wheel in a t3 housing and a unique carbon seal backplate that's compatibe with nothing else. Pretty rare. and i have one. ;)

huh so when does the average b18b with a 60/63 make boost by? i dont think i want a slow spooling turbo i like power thats usuable on the street

BLAAST 04-18-2007 01:22 AM

Re: picking best turbo for b18b

around 3500-4000 rpm.
With the .48 turbine you're sure to be completely spooled up by 3000 RPM.

You will like it then. Not completely related, but I made 10 psi of boost on a D16 by about 3200RPM, started spool around 2500RPM.

SSAC.

I'm going with a big 16G on an LS/VTEC for this season, hopefully it spools quickly as well as I really liked the powerband of the old motor.

You'll like it...16g on my b16a hits threshold at 3k rpms and still makes full boost up to 8200. IMO it's one of the best matched setups I've ran in a long time.
