phillstubs tial style bov and compressor surge

So I bought a bunch of stuff from philstubs, and the bov will not open, the spring seems pretty stiff, is there anyway to make the spring less stiff, can i cut it? Does anyone have any hmt solutions. Thanks.

1 spring inside the bov, I do not know what it is rated at though. I need one for -20hg @ idle. Its like 11psi

Every chinese BOV I've come in contact with we had to pull the spring out and clip a coil or two off.

Just pull it out, clip a small amount off, reassemble, test.
Repeat.

Go in small increments so that you don't cut off too much.

My Tial BOV also isn't even opening at idle. Even reving it up it's really slow on the reaction. Opening late in which will cause compressor surge. This is with Tial 11psi spring in the bov. Since I'm a cheap ass I just start cutting off a coil at a time of the spring until it open and close whenever I rev it and let off. I haven't ran it yet but I'm sure it'll work 100x better than before.

No offense Phillstubs but you should really just buy the good ---- when it comes to wastegate and BOV's. Buying intercoolers isn't such a big deal because their design and purpose is simple. But things such as wastegates and bov's are not only important to your motor but also the growth of the turbo generation. By purchasing name brand parts you give more money to the growth and enhancement of our wonderful sport. I realize pockets get tight but thats something to think about.

I think the big thing that is being missed is that PhilStubbs actually uses this stuff and stands behind it. 90% of the time you aren't buying the product , but the service behind the product.

just my 2 cents

Dude u got like 10 posts, and no you ---- head i know the difference between the two. Do you? WG allows a certain amount of boost. Ie 7psi wg springg allows no more than 7psi, the rest goes out the dumptube and is, "wasted," The BOV lets off pressure in the charge pipes so that the air will not be forced back into the turbo causing surge or it spinning backwards. I need an 11 psi bov spring, the spring is too stiff, when I let off the throttle it will not blow off, the vacuum is not strong enough for the stiff spring. STFU I know what im doing.

I am going to try and buy the new spring, and see if that does it, if not I guess I have to cut the coils.

BEST ADVICE TO PHILLSTUBS = BUY CDM WG AND BOV SPRINGS!

Re: phillstubs tial style bov

wait so you're going to spend more money on a new spring, wait for it to come in, then if it doens't work modify the one you already have in your hand for free?

Makes sense to me :S

I just remembered my bov has some random spring from an autoparts store 5 min from the last track I was at. Halfway one run the top blew off and puked the spring and piston out, luckily the piston was tangled in the wiring harness. I made the next pass with napkins crammed behind the piston so it would hold boost (full throttle shift ftw) while my buddy bought the only $5 spring they had.

Re: phillstubs tial style bov

No your peanut butter thread is gay! This is actually automotive related. Dont people want honest feedback on this stuff. I have faith in pstubs that is why I bought a $27 dollar spring it is still less than a $210 dollar tial bov. Hopefully with a tial bov spring I will have a quality product that is not ghetto fabbed.

Re: phillstubs tial style bov

Birdly, that may just be an issue with your BOV. if you are interested, i can see about doing a warranty exchange. i cant do anythign if you cut the spring though, so if you cut it, its yours no matter what.

this is the first problem i have heard of with anything i have sold. there is a first time for everything and i knew the day would come eventually. even name brand parts mess up, maybe just not as often

i do try to use as much of my stuff as possible and so far it has all worked perfectly for me and a few locals

Re: phillstubs tial style bov

why would cutting th e spring void the warranty on a cdm bov? whats the spring worth .50 cents? ---- last time i contacted ssac about a fucked up fire ring they just sent me a whole new wastegate no questions asked, because they cost $5

Birdley42008 01-07-2009 08:27 PM

Re: phillstubs tial style bov

I would send it back but I ordered aluminum charge piping and with the tial bov came a ss flange pipe, so I tig welded the bov onto the normal, smaller aluminum flange on the charge piping, instead of using the v-band. I did not think I would have this type of problem.

it voids the warranty cause i have to send it back to them. if they see a cut spring then they wont credit me. they cost the manufacturer $5, but they cost me a lot more.

a bov welded onto charge pipe defiantly makes it non returnable. lol

Well its kinda hard to return an item complete if one of the components needs to be welded. Ie the bov was gunna get welded or I was gunna buy a new flange that was aluminum. Both create non-refundable situations.

Re: phillstubs tial style bov

My friend gave me a ching chong HKS SSQV Knock Off, looks just like Phil Stubbs. But I doubt it is. The ------ C-clip didnt fit, so I had to buy a different snap ring. Then the ------ thing didnt open... So I read a thread on here that someone found you run the SSQV with no spring, and it would close once you got any positive pressure... Did that, and havent had a problem since. Opens quick as ----, and I still hold boost just fine.

Im willing to bet that the majority of CDM BOVs have stiff springs in them. Then again, my car doesnt pull -20hg at idle, probably closer to -15hg. It seems to hit -20 when I let off the throttle, then go back up to -15hg.

Put some wd-40 on that ----, maybe it's sticking?

Go buy some springs at the auto parts store and see if any work. I know there's some in the sections with all those Help! parts. Just try ----.

I will try wd-40

I try to minimize the trips to autozone, if it were possible I would completely boycott them. Duralast = Scam

bought some springs for mine at a hardware store. the one that came it it cut worked better, basicly its too stiff so its not working, after i cut mine it would hang open a little at idle, but at least it worked, comp surge went away and i heard the air rush out of the bov. sounded pretty cool too

Re: phillstubs tial style bov

its just like judging knowledge by age. i cant stand that. i am 27 and i have been professionally working as some sort of mechanic since i was 18. i have gone for job interviews and i could work circles around the guys interviewing me, but since they are 20 years older than me they think i am an idiot. i also got judged by my tool box once. i probably have a good $20k in tools including the tool box and a guy told me that i must not know much about cars if thats all i had.

Birdley42008 01-09-2009 11:57 AM

Re: phillstubs tial style bov

Dude honestly, I am just judging your posting and knowledge, compared to what you said, this is my third turbo setup if I do not know the difference and the different functions of a bov compared to a waste gate then I shouldnt even be posting. Think before you post, the title says phillstubs tial style bov, not WG!

Oh yes I remeber that build, well yes, the bov will need to be lubricated and I think that should fix it, along with a tial spring or cut spring, no problems should occur IMO.

Re: phillstubs tial style bov

Yes, Got the new spring, no help the Tial 11 psi spring is taller and stiffer. Haha now I wasted $30, lame. But I greesed and cut the spring about 5 times, we took about 5 links off it so it barely makes any pressure when screwing it down. But it seems to open, and not create any turbo surge. It would blow off at points while still creating turbo surge. Whats going on?
