Default nissan t3 still good or no?

i got a turbo from a late 80's 300zx. and i was wondering if my turbo was still good. the shaft spins smooth. but its kind of ruff. i can spin it with a socket on it easily but it doesnt spin freely. is it still good?

I just had this same problem. I ran some oil through it and took apart the turbo and cleaned it. It got better but it should be fine for when you put it on the car

yeah dont be afraid to pull that t3 apart. fact is its prolly coked to ----, and may be fried but u got nothing to loose.

pull it apart get some 1500 grit sand paper and go over the shaft lightly where the bearings are, inspect the bearing surfaces also.

if the shaft has heat stress (colored) it might be whooped.

maise well give it a shot! learn how to take a turbo apart!

Just rip it apart, lay it out on a clean workbench in the order you removed all the ---- or make notes as you go or both, the alignment thing you just have to make sure the compressor wheel goes back on the shaft in the same position and the nut goes back on the same or it may be out of balance or you could just get it rebalanced once its put back together, depends how ghetto you are, i wouldnt bother balancing it just wait till it ***** up an get another
