Default Newb Here Looking For Advice w/ EZ Q's

Hello, I'm new to HMT and am very excited to get started! Been reading non-stop for like awhile now and have a fairly good idea on how to get my setup going. First setup is going to be on a y7/z6 mini me in a 97 DX coupe I built for my friend. I just have a few simple questions. I'm new to turbo'in n Tunin. I was just wondering if anyone have any tips or things they wish they would've done on their first setups. Any useful knowledge or anything. Kind of a worthless post just kinda wanna see if I can get my feet wet. I got a few q's (new to tuning to).. damn feels like kindergarden all over again. I have a fairly good idea of getting Uberdata up and runnin and am still reading on how to work it. Anyone know of any rom burners that are CHEAP? I was just wondering if a wideband is required, and without it, how good of a tuning job can be done? Also, what metal is best to be used to weld a flange on that cast manifold (extream welding newb)? Please just advice on what will help me be able to learn, I hate having others do my work (taking parts in to the shop to get welded), I'm a fast learner when it comes to things I'm interested in. Thanks!

I've read up to like page 18 and saw so many reposted questions that I didn't feel like going on any further, hoping instead of someone telling me to search, that they could spend the same amount of time and tell me the answer. Search functions suck, always hated them always will. I still try to use them though. Thanks for taking the extra time to tell me to search, could you please use the same amount of time again and tell me the answer?

Your right, my apologies, just I hate when people say use the search, do you have any good posts off hand that you could hand down that I could read up on? I'm up on the point where I could assemble a kit I think, just looking for tips that people such as you have, just anything extra. I've read all the stickies and they were very helpful. Also read through most of the turbo projects. Im starting from the end posts now like 128 and coming down, I guess that's the way to find my questions. Thanks yo

wideband 02 sensor is a must if you want accurate A/F readings during tuning.

As for the welding question, somebody else will have to answer that one for you.

I'll take a stab at answering what I can.

for a chip burner people tend to recomend betronix or something like that (someone else can probley spell it right for you, but I think you can get a kit for like 60 bucks or mabey even cheeper)

As far as welding your flange will probley be just normal steel (not stainless or aluminum), then just get some wire and just MIG the hell out it and hope it holds. Although if your doing a typical HF manifold to turbo set up it might be better just to get an adaptor plate (BMCs are very good) so you don't have to deal with welding stuff to you cast manifold.

It's a hit or miss with your first build. I cut some corners and went cheap on some things because I didn't want to have to learn and do everything. Going back, I wish I wouldn't have, but then I'd probably still have a garage full of parts if I hadn't just jumped in and flubbed my way through it. 6 months later, I have a better vision of updating my kit or building a new one.

It's like that saying; "Cheap. Fast. Reliable. Pick any two" You can have super cheap and hella fast ambition/goals, but don't expect it to last. Just use common sense and be creative when you get into jams and you'll be fine. Just remember, you will make mistakes and that's the whole basis of learning.

A WBO2 is not required, but I would probably just pay someone to tune your car the first go around. I know it probably sounds like a waste of money (I paid about $90 or so for 3 hours of V-AFC street tuning), but I will almost guarantee that my car is faster and better tuned that what I could have figured out on my own. I'd like to get into doing the tuning myself (Uberdata etc...) and I feel much more comfortable getting into it now than I would have a year ago. So I guess that's something I feel like I did right...

Oh yeah, if you don't know how to weld, I'd just have someone do it for you. Again, sounds like a waste but $20 or $30 for not having the headache of trying to figure out what to do/how to do it is worth it in my book.

beautiful! thanks alot guys! Yea I have a feeling I may cut a few corners that I'll pay for later... I'll try not to do that... You said that a Wideband is required for really accurate A/F's, so If I'm just to datalog I could get decently accurate A/F's? Also... I'm trying to tune another car that has burnt up 02 sensors, do those need to be replaced before loggin it without a wideband? Thanks again for your guys's time and helpful answers! I'm gunna look up into that rom burner.
