vortex has good info, it's just not in the normal volkswagen section. you have to go to the tech section to avoid the OMG BBS, stretched tires, badge less grill, JuR0pLaYTe, Üß3rTÜnar croud. There's still some homos in the tech section, too.

You'll also shatter your transmission. maybe try a cross flow swap for a bit?

Re: new beater needs turbo. 8v golf ugly/ ***** slow
idk if this is completely true, one of my vw friends told me about it.
basically they also built a turbo diesel version of your engine. same block, forged internals, different head, same head bolt patterns. Look into getting the turbo setup from one of those, and swapping out the compressor housing. i think you have CIS, and they also put CIS on boosted audis, volvos, and benzes, so you can grab one of those and swap it out. That was his plan, but he never finished it (bought a G60, now sold it and back to his 85 GTi, which is now getting a turbo VR6), so I don't know for sure if it all works.

any MKII turbo diesel exhaust manifold will bolt onto the stock 8V head, with some port work they match perfectly, but the stock digifant II computer usually doesnt like taking boost, i have only heard of one person running a turbo setup on the stock computer, also the tranny should be fine for now, but if you really want to you could probly swap in a turbo diesel 5-speed, almost every trans is interchangeable on MKII dubs.
if you wanna sell the car let me know :P :1

as for turboing it...i wouldnt waste my time for a daily... 88's should have CIS if i remember right, and even if it is Digi, its still gay... its gonna require a real engine management solution (getting rid of the stock ----)...
actually, maybe you can just do an additional injector setup... either way its an 8v and will still be slow...
oh and dont forget about the tranny...they are weak...
