Default new 2 the game

I have wanted to do a custom turbo setup for some time but was afraid to do so until I saw a custom twin turbo on a 87 mustang gt that ran high 10's on street slicks. I wanted to do the same but have a few questions. I'll be buying the turbos off of Ebay cause I'm on a tight budget. 1. Do both turbos have to be the same size? 2. How do I increase the fuel supply and by how much? I have done some research but any knowledge would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

another post is calling me.. well at least this time it's domestic. I really need to do a standard writeup and have it made a sticky or post it on the main page.

here we go (again)

To begin, we need some details of the car. So you have an '87 Mustang, is that an LX 4 banger or a 302? What kind of milage, is it all stock? Is it an auto or 5 speed (good ole' T-5)

Next, we need some details about you. You can't just walk in and say "it's time to turbo". Do you at least change your own oil? I see you're going for the budget build (and this is the website to be for that) but what skills do you have? Do you have access to all the tools to do this job? Having a mig welder is pretty much a MUST HAVE for what you are asking to do. What exactly do you know about forced induction, how much research have you done?

If I may suggest some reading for you, go check out www.toohighpsi.com they have some bottom dollar built sbf motors there, might give you some ideas. I can supply more websites if needed.

Checkout cadracer's turbo sbc (recent buildup) for some ideas.

To answer your questions,
1) Yeah, I would get TWIN turbos, meaning same size, same turbine ratios, and perferrably similar condition. Consider going with a single large turbo setup instead, might be a lot cheaper.

2) Fuel supply will have to be increased by many ways, might want to consider just going with a holley double pumper carb. I can't tell you the specifics of sticking with your stock EFI setup, every mustang I've played with got all that bullshit ripped out. The final judge of the fuel supply will be how much boost you plan to run, remember you need to keep a 12.5:1 air fuel ratio when boosted.

thanks dude.

if I make a post titled "READ THIS BEFORE ASKING ABOUT TURBOCHARGING YOUR CAR" will you sticky it?

I figure I can cram everything needed into one post and save myself from writing it over and over again, it will at least filter out some of the questions.

I've been tech support for many different companies and I've also written user manuals. The people asking me questions here are boyscouts compared to what I've had to deal with in the past.

Well, this is what I plan to do. I am taking a 135,000 mile 5.0 and AOD out of an 89 Lincoln LSC and putting it in a 2300 lb 84 Mazda rx7 with 4.10 gears in the rear. After the swap, it should weigh about 2400 lbs. For now, I am keeping it pretty stock cause I want to drive it around and bracket race it this season. Next year I'll put in a nice cam, some head work and a sturdy AOD and rear end behind a rebuilt motor. My goal for now is to have a low 13 sec car on the motor this season and a low to mid 11 sec turbo car by next season. You stated I should probably go with a carb instead of the EFI. I'll go that route if that's what a 1st timer should do. You also stated that I should get one big turbo instead of 2 smaller ones. I remember the stang in the mag had twin 48/52 garrett t3's on it. So would one of those be enough or how big should I go. Thanks in advance for any advice and passing on of the knowledge.

Thanks Jeff, I'll do my best.

Welcome to the world of domestics

To begin I would like to illustrate that for motors pretty much belong in 79-73 mustang notch backs. That is the only Ford I will ever own (I do plan to buy one someday). My mom has a 302 in her '97 Explorer AWD.. yeah it can haul. It handles like absolute *** and is a complete mother ****** to work on. At least my sister's '99 Tahoe has this insane concept of SPACE that I get to work with.

If at all possible, please consider going with a sbc inside your custom import car vs. a sbf. Granted you do have some hot rod websites with those ford guys that will tell you that the blue oval is not something to question. I'm more into something practical. The small block chevy is quite inexpensive, easy to find and UNIVERSAL when dealing with any motor within the 262-400 small block catagory.

With that said, weigh into your options of HP goals, FI goals, and cost and you will have your answer. I believe that the 2g RX7 with the sbc kit has a 50/50 weight distrobution.. makes a hell of a race car. There are plenty of kits out there that will make your job a simple "bolt up" procedure.

With the turbo that you want to go with, you really need to study what kind of RPM curves your ride is going to be within. A T4 that spools up at 4 grand is perfect for a drag strip car that has it's stall/torque converter set at 5 grand. I'm more needy within the low-low RPM range, I need my power at just above the idle range for the ---- that I do. Look at my motor and if you have the eye to understand, you will know what I'm talking about. This will take much research on your part and some playing around with desktop dyno to figure out where your numbers are going to be at. Any given v8 of mine would have a twin turbo setup for the love of combustion on the low end that I have.

Look into this more. The more you give on this project is the more you will get back out of it. Keep posting, me and the crew will keep answering your questions.
