Default Need some info on boosting D15B2..

Well I have been reading up on this site and many other turbo sites for quite some time, and Im seriously thinking of boosting my D. Now Most of the boosted D15 setups I see use a MPFI swap so they can use larger injectors, is it possible to just use the DPFI? Basically My current car(89' DX Hatch) is just my beater for a little while as i save up money, and I saw that i could do a cheap homeade kit for fairly cheap. Ihve heard some people on here have boosted B2's that still use dpfi, so i thought id ask around. I tried a search, but the search results are kina cluttered..

also, Like i said, im very new to turbos in general. Never installed one, but im pretty mechanically inclined. Just need to know what I need, and some basic instructons. I realized I need the turbo, which i read the 14b (TD05h) is a decent turbo. and obviously a manifold, and downpipe/flange. some type of oil/water lines, and this whole engine management thing has a me a lil confused. What would I need exactly? just a simple vafc/safc? or is there more to it then that? I appreciate the help guys.

get the mpfi, it will be easier to tune and better over all, not to mention it will add 20-30hp right away.

look into a rhb5 or a t-25 turbo. 14b will be a little big for the 1.5l but it'd do just fine if you find a good deal on it, not to mention it is abitch running charge pipes out of. either rhb5/t-25 / t-3 (.42/.4 those 3 are easy to run charge pipes and that type of ---- out of.

do yourself a favor like above and do the mpfi swap. well wroth it.

as far as mangemnt

you can chipp your ecu (get a stock 90-91 si ecu) and chip it with turboedit, you'll want the bigger 450cc injectors and that is the best way

or

you can get the 450cc injectors and control them with the afc hack

or

you can get a fmu unit and use stock injectors (yuck)

you can put together a turbokit extremely cheap if you want.

but im going to stress again, do the mpfi swap. it will help you tons.

(im currently getting a z6 head for my dx 4 door (d15b2 motor) and im putting the z6 w/ mpfi + vtec + going to be running probably a t3 .42/.48 on it.

where are you located? do you have emissions testing? if not, plan on removing your cat and making your exhuast a bit bigger (atleast 2.25")

other than that you're prett ymuch set

just a quicky recap of parts needed

turbo
manifold
downpipe
charge pipes
oil/water lines + fittings
bov
couplers
some vac lines + t fittings
injectors + either fmu/ecu/afc management system

boost guage , oil pressure gauge, fuel pressure gauge

you should have no problem reaching 150whp on the little 1.5l

spend the extra 300 bucks and get an intercooler
learn from me on this one....use you money this way and use the FMU for now...the colder air will help at lower boost levels and youre not ramming hot *** air in there on that aged motor (save you head gasket ahead of time)...FMUs arent all that bad for a beginner with 8psi...worked fine for me for over 2 years

im installing turbo on my d15b2 right now.. you can get mpfi parts for around $150.. its WELL worth the upgrade.. not to mention the tunability, etc. i would not bother with dpfi. the throttle body is tiny along with the mani..

thanks for the responses guys. Heres the deal. I currently have 2.5" full piping with no cat or resonator. so im good on exhaust. I would love to switch to mpfi, but I plan on selling the car withing the next 4-7 months and thats not something id wanna take back off to sell. I plan on moving the turbo setup to my next car, hopefully a 92-52 hatch with a D16.

about the turbo again now. An intercooler sounds good, Ive been looking at them on ebay, can get some for under $150. Is it worth it to get a side mount one, one of the smaller ones that are maybe used? not that i dont have the money, but this is supposed to be a budget setup. 8lbs of boost is plenty! I wasnt going to be happy with just 5 or 6. Just enough to give my car some extra oomph.

Now what was this about keeping the dpfi and using an FMU? Ive heard all these terms before but not fully knowledgeable on all of them, understand im pretty new to all of this. I appreciate the help guys. Im gonna see if i cant start piecing some parts together.

yeah that's a good deal but it will prolly end at $80-$140.

you for sure should get an intercooler. check some local junkyards for 1g eclipses and you can get there sidemount and make it fit.

if you put a z6 head on this, you could just swap it to your new d16...

just fyi
