My setup. Turbo lasted 70kms. Lesson learned!

Who hasn't heard someone say Don't buy Chinese turbos? Well i didn't believe them... take a look
This is my first car. I started building it when i was 17, I'm 18 now. I finally got this car to be almost finished, still need some little things here and there. As you can see from the pictures 2 of the fins on the compressor wheel are broken. What happened is the nut holding the wheel on came off, i noticed the car wasn't making any boost and i couldn't hear the turbo spool anymore, so i took of the air filter and found the nut loose inside of it! Attachment 12505 Tuning laptop/willem burner (its a ps9 ecu if anyone was wondering) Attachment 12506 Attachment 12507 https://i462.photobucket.com/albums/...4/IMG_0057.jpg Attachment 12508 I think i spent about $2800-3200 Canadian, including the engine. Setup; Stock GSR head Stock b18a block dsm 450's walbro 255 Turboedit, 1 wire vtec it goes on, but thats the basics Update* My new turbo came today! Attachment 12509 Attachment 12510 Attachment 12511 Just to compare old vs. new. China vs Garrett Attachment 12512 Attachment 12513 Old wheel Attachment 12514 This is the inside of the old compressor housing close up. Attachment 12515 I ordered precision 780cc/min injectors today, so now I don't have to worry about maxing the 450's out. Progress is slow, there has been a high of -26 for like the last 2 weeks... |
Re: My setup. Turbo lasted 70kms. Lesson learned! (Lots of Pictures)
that sucks i think i have that same turbo on my b20 vtec setup. because mine has the m12 stamp on it also and when i bought it they gave me the whole it has garret internals and is a good turbo -runaround-. but anyways i havent had any problems so far. i had this turbo for a little over 4 years now pushin 9psi and making 342hp on my stock b20 bottom. but sorry to hear that :3 i guess i just got one of those lucky 1 in 1million turbos made from the china man

I just pulled the turbo off, the inside of the compressor housing is pretty messed up, wheel is garbage obviously, and there is definitely shaft play now lol. |
Re: My setup. Turbo lasted 70kms. Lesson learned! (Lots of Pictures)
Update** Ordered a new turbo, a Garrett T3 60-1. .63 a/r exhaust housing. S compressor cover.
Should be here in a couple weeks. I'll keep it posted |

Re: My setup. Turbo lasted 70kms. Lesson learned! (Lots of Pictures)
It could have been worse, you didn't suffer any engine damage so count your blessings and chalk it up as a lesson learned.

Whats wrong with the engine? I know you guys are all about the d's. but still it was $600! The original b18a got hungry and ate a bearing. So that was no good. |
Re: My setup. Turbo lasted 70kms. Lesson learned! (Lots of Pictures)
This project have potential. Throw a better turbo and everything will be fine.
Integra for the win! |
Re: My setup. Turbo lasted 70kms. Lesson learned! (Lots of Pictures)
that's not too bad, considering where that nut could have gone...
|
Re: My setup. Turbo lasted 70kms. Lesson learned! (Lots of Pictures)
I was tempted to use one of those ching chongs a year or two ago untill i saw all the horror stories..cheaper to get a holset in the first place.

Re: My setup. Turbo lasted 70kms. Lesson learned! (Lots of Pictures)
i <3 my cdm never had problems w/ em

Sucks about the turbo! Your vac line on the BOV looks kinked. |
Re: My setup. Turbo lasted 70kms. Lesson learned! (Lots of Pictures)
i personally prefer JY turbos...especially from wrecked cars :)
i put a JY Volvo TD04HL-15G on my buddies tercel & it works great...he just can't keep transmissions in it now |

Re: My setup. Turbo lasted 70kms. Lesson learned!
that's a nice wii nunchuk shawn. where'd you get it? :P
looks good man. hopefully after this turbo in, everything will run nice and smooth! ;D |

some updates.
I put my injectors in. Attachment 10246 Literally wired the second stage of the gsr manifold open. Attachment 10247 I did get an air filter and the silicone coupler i was needing, they are both on now but not in this picture Attachment 10248 I'm thinking i'm going to try to bend this, not sure if it'll work. But it obviously doesn't right now either Attachment 10249 Big thanks to the super old kerosene heater. Attachment 10250 I will be pretty busy in the next couple weeks but i'm going to start tuning soon. Hopefully it won't be too hard to get it to idle. |
Re: My setup. Turbo lasted 70kms. Lesson learned!
Setup looks solid, but you really should do the obd0-1 conv
|
Re: My setup. Turbo lasted 70kms. Lesson learned!
love that heater... reminds me of home :6
|
Re: My setup. Turbo lasted 70kms. Lesson learned!
You miss it now that you are homeless.
Setup looks great, but you should have taken the dual core radiator instead of the single core. Keep update! |
Re: My setup. Turbo lasted 70kms. Lesson learned!
1 thing: If this was my build, i'd do something with that oil line. It's rediculous close to the mani and wg elbow.
Other than that, nice. Sucks about your turbo and motor getting teh suck but i love DA tegs. Post moar! |
Re: My setup. Turbo lasted 70kms. Lesson learned!
if your gonna use that to hold open the IAB (secondaries) in ur intake manifold, just run a vac hose from a nipple from the manifold to that vac nipple that controls the secondaries. My h22 isn't boosted yet, but at idle and hi vacuum my IAB's are closed, and when theres low vacuum (i.e.- WOT) the IABS open and its 8 runners. You can see them move when u rev it from under the hood.
On a stock ECU/setup, the ECU controls a vacuum box and tells the IABS to open at a certain RPM at a certain load on the engine...well with it rigged str8 form the manifold to the actuator, it'll open up under certain load, which is loss of vacuum, which means it'll be open for boost too, not just all the time. I like ur enginuity tho.... |

I know how it works, the ecu grounds a solenoid at a certain rpm, which supplies vacuum to that nipple, opening the IABs. |
Re: My setup. Turbo lasted 70kms. Lesson learned!
looks sweet
|
Re: My setup. Turbo lasted 70kms. Lesson learned!
well then the wire tie should work ;D
The time the turbo lasted, did it pull nice? |
Re: My setup. Turbo lasted 70kms. Lesson learned!
i barely got to drive it. the clutch is still brand new and being broken in.
I don't think i went past 5000 rpm. I was still trying to get the partial throttle tune good. didn't go into vtec but that turbo did build boost pretty early, it felt good. Should pull harder now. |
Re: My setup. Turbo lasted 70kms. Lesson learned!
that kerosene burner is fucken poisonous

2 people in edmonton were recently sent to hospital from Carbon monoxide poisoning, they were trying to heat their garage with a propane bbq or burner or something. It hasn't killed me over the last year, i just try to avoid standing over it and taking deep breaths. |

You can tell from this picture how far the oil line is from the manifold. Attachment 10117 Attachment 10118 For when i run out of Kerosene. i also have the electric. Attachment 10119 But i need some help. I'm having a hard time getting this car to idle. It keeps flooding, take a look at my fuel/ ignition maps. Keep in mind precision 780cc/min Attachment 10120 Attachment 10121 Overall, Attachment 10122 Any suggestions? |
Re: My setup. Turbo lasted 70kms. Lesson learned!
What AFRs?
Idle is also controlled by the TB's throttle stop, the air bleed screw, and the IACV. If it's trying to idle at super low rpms my suggestion would be to reset the air bleed screw (turn it all the way in, then back it out a half turn. this is how they are supposed to be from the factory) and set the idle with the throttle stop (something like 2mm allen key and a 7mm wrench to manipulate the locknut). If the injectors are a bit wierd (primarily from you not being able to tweak battery compensation tables with TE) then just idle the car at 900-1000 and don't worry about targeting a stock idle like 750-800 rpms. |

well i just raised the idle, its just over 1000rpm. I'll probably lower it later on.
I also changed the sparkplugs from ngk br7es i think, to some old stock ones from my b18a. Watch this video, I didn't touch the gas pedal for the entire video. I don't think you can see it, but that vac/boost gauge doesn't work properly. Its at about 21-24 inHG. http://i462.photobucket.com/albums/q...h_MVI_0205.jpg This is the map that it was on at the time of the video. I would think it would be super rich, especially at idle. Attachment 10044 and this is the way i'm burning the at29c256 Attachment 10045 |
