My homemade turbo'd 1994 Mazda MX-3 V6 PICS... round 2

Well, not new to this game but new to the forum.

Little background...

Built a turbokit a while back (check out www.cardomain.com/id/rebel2k4) using a stock t3/t04b off a buick grand national. No intercooler, water injection, 2.2 60' turned 13.8 @ 102. Went to 550cc injectors and brought it down to a 13.05 @ 109.5

Itching for more power so I threw this kit together. Using a Holset HY35 turbo off a dodge cummins, cheapie ssautochrom intercooler, mandrel turbo piping with bends from jcwhitney, all done by me. Took about 60 hours this go-round

Enjoy:

Your a ------- champ! i didnt know they put v6's in the mx3. And furthermore, i didnt know they could stand up to 15psi. That thing is laying down some serious #'s. Your work is DEFINATELY approved by hmt!!! O0

Re: My homemade turbo'd 1994 Mazda MX-3 V6 PICS... round 2

Thanks for the comments guys :)

Yeah, the original motor was a 1.8L V6. I bought the car with a thrown rod. The 2.5L V6 out of the probe gts, mx6's, 626's, etc is practically a direct drop in. I threw this one in about 20k miles ago. After some serious detonation on the last turbo kit it started to smoke. I've almost got my built motor done, in the meantime I'm trying to kill this one. It just won't die!

I remember reading the projects on this site some 3-4 years ago, and to be honest thats really what got me interested in doing what I'm doing now...

So, in a way, this one goes out to homemade turbo... lol

Megasquirt'n'Spark :6

I've wanted to supercharge my Vulcan for years, but every year I can never afford to get that started. I don't own a welder and I don't have a friend who I can ask to weld ----, and...yeah, enough excuses. :-[

finally ive seen someone turbo the V6 version. Props man, looks like a very nice project. How much boost are you running? Welcome to HMT

Re: My homemade turbo'd 1994 Mazda MX-3 V6 PICS... round 2

For the money I have into this car, I can't complain by any means. At first I wasn't crazy about the car but it really has grown on me. The other day someone asked me if I could have any car what I would want... and I said I already have it.

Bought it for $375 with a thrown rod ;)

My intentions started as just putting in a new motor. THen I realized what the hell, i have a spare y pipe and practically all the parts to do a turbo kit... I'll build a simple one. Next thing I know it spirals out of control and here I am building a motor and trying to find a way to get the power to the ground

Sadly, the car isn't a daily driver anymore, not reliable enough and always under the knife for more mods. It is still a full street car though, sporting a stock suspension, full interior, etc. I really like the feel of it stock and didn't want to compromise that to "go fast"

For fuel management, I am running megasquirt'n'spark with redtop 270cc nissan sidefeed injectors. I dremeled off the tips of them to make them flow 550cc (nice double flow, can you say FREE? )

Last time I weighed it it came in at 2640 lbs no driver. Pretty light indeed...

I can't say enough about the KL V6 motors, they are one sweet powerplant with boost. Anyone out there who has a PGT/MX6/MX3 v6, trust me turboing it is worth your while.

As of now it's boosting 15 psi.

Maybe I could add this car to the projects? I could do a good write up, and have quite a few pics of both the turbo kits I've built

accordepicenter 11-26-2005 02:25 PM

Re: My homemade turbo'd 1994 Mazda MX-3 V6 PICS... round 2

15psi stock engine or built? How does the water injection work (thats what your using right?)

KLT-MX3 11-26-2005 02:36 PM

Re: My homemade turbo'd 1994 Mazda MX-3 V6 PICS... round 2

I dont use h20 injection anymore. With the intercooler my charge temps stay about 100 degrees.

On the old turbo with a 400cc water nozzle I'd get my charge temps down to around 130 degrees on 10 psi. Not bad for no intercooler. Without spraying I'd have detonation and theyd be around 230 degrees.

I turned it up to 17 psi on the old turbo, no intercooler and same 400cc nozzle. Charge temps went to my IAT max, which is 260 degrees F. I imagine with a smaller nozzle I could have got them back down, but the h20 takes the place of air and fuel and in the end you'll lose more power than a proper intercooled setup. It was good for low boost though. I would guess too I pushed that little t3/t04b out of its efficiency at the higher boost levels, thus making it even worse.

How I set it up was used a windshield washer pump with a home depot sprinkler mister nozzle. Turned it on with a hobbs at 6 psi.

Yes, stock junkyard engine. This motor has 150k miles on it, 20k boosted.

accordepicenter 11-26-2005 02:52 PM

Re: My homemade turbo'd 1994 Mazda MX-3 V6 PICS... round 2

well im thinking about running my stock engine accord to maybe even more boost on a real water injection setup to cope with the pump gas... not sure if its a good idea though. Ive been running 13psi-13.5 psi on some 110oct and 93 oct mixed in (id say its still around 100 oct) but i wanna get away from race gas and run methanol/water...

blackoutgt 11-29-2005 01:53 AM

Re: My homemade turbo'd 1994 Mazda MX-3 V6 PICS... round 2

hey i saw that on PT today too...
- im in the process myself... but im alittle worried on making the hotpipes since im no welder...but your setup looks fairly simple... and im probably going to use your pic to model mine from!

- so is that a kl03 with a ze/millenia curved neck manifold am i correct?

*mad props!*

15 psi on stock internals is insane... i been reading up on boosting KLs alot and ill i've heard is it can take 14psi... and the highest anyone has seen was 12...

Can you share some info about modifying the Nissan sidefeeds? This is the first time I've ever heard of that being done!

I found out about it at probetalk.

Here's one of the threads with details http://forums.probetalk.com/showthread.php?t=1701147295

Back a few months ago people said the highest the KL would take on stock internals was high 200 hp, then low 300, now it's pretty much in the 400's range.

Whats more important that "PSI" per say is how much HP you're making.... and tuning is the only way to do so even remotely close to reliably

Re: My homemade turbo'd 1994 Mazda MX-3 V6 PICS... round 2

Yeah I leaned it out a little and probably pickep up 20 hp or so in the top end. Its running mid-high 10:1 afr now, any leaner and it wants to detonate.

Re: My homemade turbo'd 1994 Mazda MX-3 V6 PICS... round 2

oh snap 395whp on a stock motor! Damn, your doing somthing right.

But 2640lbs with no driver seem's kinda heavy for such a small car.

KLT-MX3 12-02-2005 02:10 PM

Re: My homemade turbo'd 1994 Mazda MX-3 V6 PICS... round 2

Haha... or just trying to blow the motor ;) Which isnt working

2640 is pretty heavy. Stock it is 2520, with the turbo kit, motor swap, and all the stuff I have added I brought it up to 2640.

Its still got a full stock interior with airbags and stereo. There are people who strip these out and can get them down to 2200-2300 lbs, but to me thats totally not worth it. Ill make some sacrifices at the strip before I make them on the street. Id rather just make a little more power and make up for it... haha

KLT-MX3 05-15-2007 11:05 PM

Re: My homemade turbo'd 1994 Mazda MX-3 V6 PICS... round 2

Well thought I'd give it the bump. Some updates:

I did blow that motor. Not terribly though. 5 bent rods and 3 broken piston crowns anyone?

https://www.supermotors.net/getfile/...e/im001193.jpg

Ive got another stock motor in there now. 175k miles on the clock and making more power than before. We'll see how long it lasts. I've put around 15k on it now...

If it's untuned, how were you getting away with 91 octane and that much boost? Stock compression ratio? Stock timing? How are you controlling those big injectors off of boost?

It was like 10 degrees total timing under boost and pig rich, sub 10:1 afr. I don't consider that tuned, at least not in the sense of a good tune.

I have megasquirt'n'spark to control the injectors. Itll still pull 30 mpg at 75-80 mph on the interstate if I stay off the throttle!

thanks. yeah, i bought the car with a stock 1.8L V6 and a thrown rod. The 2.5 v6 out of the probe gt/mx6/626 bolts in and thats what i have been running since i bought the car. The GS is the V6 model, and theyre hard to find. Even harder to find a 94+. The 94+ has an awesome interior compared to a 92/93. The 92/93 is fugly and Id never own one for that reason...
