Default my dohc zc first build, build thread

okay guys, so im hoping, since im a noob, that it will be okay to ask a few noob questions. first off, thanks in advance to anyone who will help me out, its mainly my only means of help.

bare with me i got alot to write, im really sorry

okay, so i am piecing together the parts to boost my jdm dohc zc (jdm is so sweet)

so far, i have...

14b attached to some type of manifold, looks nice with a i believe 35mm wastegate flange
(came with internal wastegate, opinions on that please!)

large spearco fmic(why, cause it looks cool thats why hah no im kidding i dont know i just like it, its one of those things...)

460 low impediance rx7 injectors

chipped p06/conversion harness (thanks to marcus)

obd1 dizzy new stuff inside i forget hah but i paid 130 so you know...

i still need a blow off valve, wategate, IC piping (going to use the ebay i think its called "just intercoolers" universal kit

oh and plans for the motor: getting it milled .20 over, forged pistons, tt rods, new bearings, rings, and mabye the block posting like i saw on this site

oh and, i bought this off someone, for 50 bucks.. i got ripped... but lemme know if you think its worth to buy a sohc pickup and put this on, or if i should just make my own while the motor is out...what am i supposed to just use a braided steel line and a hose clamp on it i was expecting a threaded hole i could screw a fitting for my line into....

and i think i should be good, heres some pics, followed by noob questions!

1: do i neeeeed to use a catch can? im seeing alot of people running 300whp setups with a little beather on the VC

2: should i use the p06 ecu, i already have the zdyne secu...? im just not sure i can find anywhere where people will tune with that... and i surely have not a clue

3: can i modify my aem intake, i want to use that as charge piping, it goes already down into the wheel well.. but i want to mess with the spot where the vaccume for the VC goes, for my BOV

4: what kind of psi will i be looking at safely running (with rebuild) i have another car so it wont be a daily, but it will be a 1ce a week driver.

5: what kind of power potential does it have ?

cool guys thanks i dont mean to come on to the site and be a jackass and number my questions at you, any help is greatly appreciated. really i mean that

thanks,

matt

turbo looks a bit small for a dohc zc.

5: what kind of power potential does it have ? Great low end but top end is going to fall off.

Next time do a bit more research; or you will be flamed.

hey matt, i'm running a 14b on my zc also.
i'm using my egay intake as my upper charge piping, but i just tapped and put a bolt in that hole for vacuum. i bought a 1g dsm bov and it came with some pipe so i just used that. the problem with using that vacuum for your bov is it's probably alum and unless you have a way to weld alum it won't work.

like crxvtec91 said the top end will suffer cause the 14b is a little small, but when i'm on the freeway in 5th gear and i gas it. i'm already at 5psi. i've raced civics with exhaust and when they down shift i just gas it.
and no i'm not bragging about beating slow cars, i'm just saying you don't need to down shift when passing people on the freeway.

as for the psi you can run, i'm running 10psi on my motor everyday. i bought it from hmo about 3 years ago and who knows how many miles are on it. i'm thinking about upping the boost, but i want to get it tuned first. right now i'm rocking a xenocron basemap.

for the bov i'd just use a 1g dsm, they are cheap and work great. you can find used intercooler piping if you just keep looking.
i found my intercooler and piping on this site. it was a half assed pieced together setup, but works great

cool thanks guys for the response i appreciate it... the ecu thing, i have everything to upgrade to obd1, just not sure why it didnt work the first time (only changing the ecu, using conversion harness, and rewiring dizzzy.

psi wise, im talking about using the tuner toy rods, and some type of forged pistons, stock honda bearings and stock rings

from what people say, the 14b is a perfect turbo for the zc.... thats why i went with it

okay so, im kinda stuck with the blow off issue because i want to keep my aem intake pipe... i can block off that vaccume spot, but where should i put the bov? im thinking.. theres the rubber piece directly in front of the throttle body, can i just replace it with a pipe and the bov or is that tooo close to the TB.. i know its closer, better.. but im not sure if there is a "too close"

thanks guys,

matt

---- forgings, get Vitaras to go on the sweet TT rods. If you set your piston to wall in the sweet .003-.0035" range you can run everything that turbo has and then some, including letting it spool to 20 psi in the midrange and then taper off, resulting in a huge and torquey powerband.

External wastegates are awesome. Internal gates are failure units.

I'll vouch for the ZDyne SECU, they are rock solid. It is no different from tuning any other Honda ECU, so if they can do Crome/Hyundaidata they can do ZDyne.

14B is the perfect turbo to make 220-240 whp max, nothing more. You can get the same spool with a lot more power out of any number of turbos, but not all are as budget oriented.

I do not like your oil pan. That thing is a piece. I've nothing against welding a tube in place, but that tube is 1) too goddamn small you want 5/8" aka -10 AN minimum drain hole and 2) directly below one of the oil pan bolts which is a stupid place to put it. When you go looking for another make sure you get the correct pan... I forget if ZC has an engine girdle, if it does you need an oil pan off a D16 with a girdle (Z6) and if it doesn't then off a D16 that doesn't.

you can weld your bov onto a piece of exhaust tubing and then cut a section of your intake out and put that piece in. it shouldn't cost too much to have someone weld the bov flange onto your alum piping though. this is hmt and i have a fluxcore booger throwing welder, so i'm a cheap ***.
the cool thing about using the cold air intake is it has a bend in it to clear the battery. that is why i used my egay short air intake.

oh and don't get me wrong i love my 14b zc. i wouldn't trade it for a free t3.
fast spool and enough hp for me.

okay well im going to try to get the obd1 to work, and if it doesnt work, ill stay obd0, using the zdyne...

well what kind of pistons can i find that will match up with the tunertoy rods?? the vitara's seem to have too low of compression, im worried about daily driving on that.

but what your saying is, if i buy the tuner toy rods and some type of nice piston, using stock rings and bearings, ill be good to run alot of boost and easily make that 240 hp?

what would be safe psi to run with that setup?

thanks guys,

matt

Nobody with Vitaras bitches about daily drive.

I cranked Jared's TT/Vitara setup to 20 psi; it was only a T25 so the boost tapered to 12-13 psi pretty quick, but it made 210 wtq at 3700 rpms - that's driveable.
