The easiest way that I know to check if your clutch is slipping is to pull the E-brake, put the car in 3rd or 4th gear and slowly let the clutch pedal out. The engine should die. If it doesn't, your slipping. By the way, if it is slipping, don't leave the pedal up any longer that you have to. It will only burn it up faster...

Just go out on the freeway, put it in 5th gear at 45mph and floor it, watch the rpms, and you will easily be able to tell if the clutch is slipping..

and yes to access the clutch, the tranny has to come out.

Yeah... a newbie like yourself could do it and save yourself a couple of hundred bucks in labor, thats if your familiar with your car and handy with tools and have a couple of hours to kill. I would recomend getting a repair manual for your car just as a guidline and having all the proper tools at hand.

First your going to have to drain the tranny oil, then remove the passenger side drive axle. this is a bitch sometimes, remove the axle nut on the hub that holds it in place by punching out the tab with a screwdriver .. then loosen the nut with the car on the ground and tires in place with the proper sized socket and a breaker bar ( remember righty tighty, lefty loosy) then twist the hub push the axle out of the hub and then pull out the shaft carfully.. if it doesnt want to come out get a small thin crowbar or hubcap removing tool and stick it between the tranny and axle then carefully pry it loose. once the axle is gone just remove all mounts, cables, and anything connected to the tranny that might get dammaged if removed (sensors) The easiest part will be removing it.. just remove the bolts that hold it to the engine and pull the tranny away. you need 2 people or a hoist or jack to safely lower the tranny to the floor... now that its out. remove the pressure plate bolts (evenly and in a criss cross patern) then remove it from the flywheel. Inspect the flywheel for signs of uneven wear or scoring (burnt up ----) if it is severe you might want to have the flywheel turned. (this is a bitch to remove without the proper tools... mark each bolt to where it was!!! if not to bad. and your ghetto like me... just sand it in a circular motion with a sanding block untill it is free of crap and clean it with brake cleaner. ok inspect the relese fork(thing that looks like a fork on tranny) for warpage or signs of wear. remove and lubricate the ball section with small amount of grease. also add a small amount of grease to the input shaft... this will allow it to slide into the clutch disc easier.

when installing a new clutch kit:... hopefully it came with a clutch aligning tool... put the disc in first , accordingly ( with the damper springs poiting away from the engine) then the preasure plate over. slip the tool in the clutch disc until it is centered to the flywheel. apply the preasure plate over it and tighten the bolts gradually and in a criss cross patern. tighten it down and tourque it to 19ft-lb after the clutch is installed... time to put in the tranny... this is a bitch because you have to be carefull when the input shaft goes in.. because if you dont put it in straight... it might shift the clutch and you have to take it apart again and realign it. Check that all the dowl pins are in place (not doing so is pricey, broken bell housing and ----) Lift the tranny on the hoist or jack to make sure the input shaft is level and snap the tranny back in place. apply a bit of loctite on the bolts and tighten them up (need torque specs ask me) not too tight as they can easily strip.. and then connect all mounts cables wires and all... installation is always the opposite of removal.
dont forget to fill the tranny with fluid. clutch fluid(if applicable) and check everything twice... and you should be set.

I know this is a long *** post but its 2 in the morning.. I am wired and i cannot fall asleep...

If you need help with anything just ask.. i read the posts everyday... i have no life... jk...

---- i know i missed a few steps like starter removal and ---- like that... but hopefully hes a smart boy and figures it out...

good luck...

That was a damn good writeup... (Jeff Maybe we should have a writeup section!)

Either way, I work slowly, and it took me (by myself) about 6 hours total doing the clutch on my HF, just remember, to take the mounts OFF OF THE TRANNY, and you'll have no troubles, I spent about an hour and a half trying to get the tranny back in with the mounts on!

The hardest part is the lifting. Trannies are heavy when you're lying on your back under the car!

yeah... thats about how long it took me too to take the tranny off and put it back the first time... now it takes me like an hour... and i learned that trannys were heavy the hard way... peice of ---- almost fell on me... so you better be carefull... lift your car with the proper tools and techniques... support it with jack stands and put wood ... rocks or at least the tire under the frame in case something happens... work on a flat hard level surface... man... just plain be carefull... ok... safety is a hassle sometimes but its worth it... trust me.
