do you have a a/f meter..

at least that tells you if your running lean .

Copper gaskets require machine block to the head/block or both. Need to get groove machined in either side with O-rings, thats the only way copper gaskets will seal. Call SCE the leader in copper head gaskets.

The stock composite gaskets on Early d-series just blow *** dude, It was probably just really old and almost on its way out. I've blew several of them. The best upgrade is going to a D16z6 Tri metal factory gasket. They are about 55 bucks at the dealer, and well worth it
