Mod a 96+ dx manifold for A/C?

Lol, unlike the most of you guys, i own a fairly new 2000 civic ex and i am not gonna kill my A/C for this turbo..

now i was wondering if i could use instead the 96+ dx manifold or better yet my 00 ex manifold? i have to somehow angle the turbo closer to the block since there's a huge hole for the turbo to fit in there instead of trying to fit the turbo where the A/C rad/fan is.... any ideas? Should i tell my exhaust shop to cut and weld new primaries on my manifold or something or add a curved extension before the turbo?

check my page. it's easier than you think unless you plan on using some huge ass turbo.

would this work with an EG??? i think the ek's have more engine bay room....not sure on that tho.

I would really love to find out how you rotated that turbo to keep your AC. I am planning my 99 DX project as we speak and the AC is a big issue for me.

well we just gotta wait for the guy to answer us.. his pics are blurry but i think i know how.. just rotate it then make the adapter plate for the turbo rotated i think... i'll see when i get my parts...

the red line would be the normal configuration...the black line is with the plate made rotating it. it actually needed to be rotated more after this pic was made just before rotating it more.

sorry this pic is so blurry, but you can see that the turbo is rotated more than initially.

he said u gotta move the condenser fan to the front.. argh, more modding... well doesn't matter for now, later i'll buy the thinner fans and hopefully my custom manifold will clear the damn fan

the manifold will clear it, but since i had to rotate the turbo so much to clear the ac compressor the turbo compressor actually sits about and inch from the ac condensor. what ever fans you use you will need to mount it to the front of the condensor. i just used the stock one mounted in the same airflow direction (big side facing out/little side facing the condensor). this way it cleared my fmic. the only thing i had to make were 4 brackets (two to hold the condensor in place and two to hold the fan). no rewireing was required since the airflow was the same. i'll probably go to slim line fan since it will look better, (65 bucks at pepboys) but it works for now.

how did you rotate the turbo anyhow?

what i mean is like did you drill the STD manifold bolt pattern on a 30 deg angle or the turbo pattern? i know to use steel but how did you get the tools to drill all the stuff?? you have access to this stuff?

also, so it's REALLY necessary to move the condensor fan to the front (ie. behind the bumper cover)?? so i guess i have to aim the fan the other way or something??

After reading these posts I decided to just rotate my turbo (IHI) 180 degrees so the ports were on the passenger side. I think (Havent test fit it yet) that the setup will just clear the compressor in this case. The only problem is that the outlet of the turbo now sits directly underneath the manifold. If the setup clears the compressor I may just rotate the turbo housing 90 degrees to clear the manifold. What problems all this may cause with hooking up my downpipe have yet to be seen as well... Has anyone tried this?

i didn't modify the turbo or manifold with the exception of porting. the plate i made allowed me to rotate. i just cut the plates and welded them together in the fashion that i needed to have it in a rotated position. i just drilled them and tapped/threaded the holes in the plates to install my studs. to make my studs i bought automotive grade bolts/nuts and hacked the heads off to make studs.

i couldn't mount my turbo with the compressor on the passenger side because it hit the block and wouldn't allow me to mount it to my manifold. if your manifold/turbo combination will allow you to do that then you could do that, but the downpipe is quite a tight squeeze to clear the ac compressor and it would be a good idea to wrap it to shield the compressor from excessive heat.

basically you just need to install the manifold and try different mounting positions of your turbo and try to visualize how everything is going to fit.
