Ball and spring, definitely not a bleed type. You need to loosen that thing up all the way or else you'll be screwed.
Actually, it appears it has both ball and spring and bleeder types of control. I assume you were turning the ball and spring valve and not the bleeder valve, which is why you experienced tons of pressure.

Loosen one of them all the way. Try to blow through it. If you can, you loosened the ball and spring valve. The bleed valve as the website says is for fine tuning a boost psi close to one gotten with the ball and spring. My guess is the big twist **** on top is the ball and spring, with the hex **** coming out the side being the bleeder, but that would only make sense.
