Lowering Boost Audi Wastegate.

ok finally got some pics so now i will do a small write up on this thing.

so heres the wastegate
http://www.shortyz.net/turbo2/audiwastegate.JPG

so basically the stock wastegate is set at 14.5 psi which does us honda guys no good at all. so lets get started.

so take all the little nuts off (carefull when unscrewing the last one there is a spring and itll fly right off)

http://www.shortyz.net/turbo2/wg/wg1.jpg

so now that its apart the fun begins.
below is a picture of the top half of the wastegate removed.
http://www.shortyz.net/turbo2/wg/wg5.jpg
as u can see i have drilled out the metal cap on the very top, you need to do this to gain acess to the adjustement screw.

http://www.shortyz.net/turbo2/wg/wg7.jpg
http://www.shortyz.net/turbo2/wg/wg6.jpg

remove the adjustment cap with an allen wrench. here we see its removed. (wow) :P

http://www.shortyz.net/turbo2/wg/wg8.jpg
this is the scary part, i did this the ghetto way also.
i took a spade bit for cutting holes in wood, shapened it up a bit and put it in the drill press. you want to grind down the nipple that the adjustment screw threads into. (this is done because if you back off the adjustment screw all the way this only results in about 12.5 psi.) i "machined" the nipple down with my spade bit. (WARNING: using a spade bit is very tricky and can fuckup the threads in an instant, be careful itll move around a lot if not secured) make sure the center of the spade bit isnt eating the threads!!! (i chopped the pointy bit off my spade bit, but this made it even worse lol)
take the nipple down till there is about 1/4" of nipple is left.
here is a pic of it ground down.
http://www.shortyz.net/turbo2/wg/wg6.jpg

if you have access to a milling machine i suggest using that it will make the job got 100x's faster and better.
the point of grinding down that nipple is that the adjustment screw will go way farther, BACK THE SCREW OFF ALL THE WAY, when u re assemble it.

good luck my fellow hmt buddies. any questions post em.

Re:Lowering Boost Audi Wastegate.

Does that audi wastegate work well? I am currently making a manifold for my t3t4 and i need a wastegate. The ports on that thing lok like they are 20mm so dang tiny compared to even the smallest Tial. would that mother get a ton of boost creep on a d16z6 10psi t3t4 setup?

Semnos 05-01-2003 04:45 PM

Re:Lowering Boost Audi Wastegate.

It's 30mm not 20.
I had one sold it to a friend
It works really well.
We just put the 7-9 psi turbonetics spring in it and it boosts 7 psi.
Tu turbonetics spring is a bit bigger in diameter, but it works.

Damnnn ...you still here??? wow
You haven't posted in a while..just lurking ??
Why did you give up turbo?

Jcushing 12-19-2003 07:12 PM

Re:Lowering Boost Audi Wastegate.

1. my transmision USDM type R with a JDM final drive
2. B20 with that tranny plus turbo = no fun
3. fear of boosting a b20
4. $$

i replaced my first b20 with a b20z but before i replaced it i was thingkin about getting a b16 with Rocket springs, retainers and r cams so i could rev to like 9500 and keep the tranny. all in all it was a series of events poorly timed that led me to keep what i had.

now i just spend 500 bux on a header so theres really no goin back hehe

Too bad man.
That setup sounds like fun ;D.
Maybe in the future when you get a project car on the side just for fun...than you can go turbo that one

yea, we need the pictures! i didnt know they were set at 14.5 psi. im gonna run 12 so i guess i can just turn that adjustment screw all the way in?

Re: Lowering Boost Audi Wastegate.

i talked to fook who got one around the same time i didi and he said his friend cut about 1 and a half coils off the spring and it lowered down to like 4 psi. throw a boost controller on it and its perfect.

it wasn't a friend, tho i wouldnt necessarily not call him that, it was your friendly neighborhood HMT admin on his ZC. ;)

Cut 1 coil you might be better off.

Re: Lowering Boost Audi Wastegate.

im gonna do what fook says cause i dont really feel like tearin into the damn wastegate.thanks fook

Re: Lowering Boost Audi Wastegate.

I was goning to try to measure the spring rate and find another that has a lighter rating.

i think in the end Jeff tried a Tial 8psi spring and still got 4psi.

bumblezc 06-21-2005 09:04 AM

Re: Lowering Boost Audi Wastegate.

MMM, Okay, I still might look into this, that way when I'm buil;t I can run the 14.5psi spring.
