lowering boost by the actuator rod?

i understand that i have to extend the actuator rod.. im going to weld it on so how much do i have to weld on so that it will be around 4psi? it is currently around 10 psi on my 14b
and if im correct im planning to boost around 4psi and use a manual boost controler to slowly turn up the boost?

Trial and error i suppose....

the thing is its dead weld i have to keep coming back to the shop to weld? that would kinda of suck... but aproximately anyone can take a guess? a guess will be better than my guess any day.

You shouldn't have to weld anything. Just cut the end off the rod and use a die to thread it. Then get a rod coupling nut at home depot and screw it on. Now you can put another threaded rod in the other end and rig it up to connect to the flapper. This way it's adjustable and you can change the rod on the other side if you need more length.

i follow you guys so far, but me and my bro has no idea how that cut died thing you talked about... we are pretty much settle on welding.... ok tell me this... how about leaving the flapper at half way? still too much??

Yeah half way will probably be too much still. Actually the threaded sleeve nut idea is an easy and inexpensive way to be able to adjust your boost also.
just cut your actuator rod in half, then go to the hardware store (Home Depot or wherever) and pick up a "Die". A die is what's used to thred bolts or in this case your actuator rod. Next go find a sleeve nut to fit the threads. the sleeve nut looks just like a nut, but it's long. now you can lengthen and shorten your wastegate rod as needed to set your desired boost level.

Many throttle assemblies are setup like that. Every machine shop that I've ever been in has a quality tap & die set.

Print this post out, take it to them, they might be able to help you out some.

If you have a local harbor freight nearby to you, you can get a cheap tap and die set for like $15. It looks like this

what that will do is allow you to thread the rod so you can pop one of these bad boys on there.

http://www.newbieforces.com/files/couplingnuts.jpg

then get another rod and thread it with the tap and figure out some way to connect it to the flapper arm. If you post pics of it, I can give you some ideas for that too.

Once you do this, you can turn that nut to adjust the length of the arm for more precise adjustment. If you need more that it offers, use 2 or 3.. the sky is the limit ;)

The other option is something like this. This is a Saab wg actuator and comes threaded from the factory.

and this is the same one with the threaded rod disconnected. I've seen this kind of thing at hardware stores before, but I haven't found any lately.

I hope that clears everything up and lets you know that you have many options with the welding being the least desirable due to the non adjustability of it.
