low budget FWD traction ideas..

well, I got beat down by a Camaro SS last night.. not sure what he had done but from a roll I was hanging, from a dig he ------- left me while I played "spin the tires" off the line. (this wasn't on a residential road and no traffic)

So I'm looking for some ideas to lower 60' times a bit without spending a small fortune.

1.) super stiff rear spring/strut combo
2.) traction bars
3.) more weight up front

any other ideas?

Re: low budget FWD traction ideas..

traction bars help, couple sponsors have some good stuff to use to make you own

don't forget unless you like being bounced to death, changing to stiff rear springs is not the way to go. if this car is a dd, i would build some suspension limiters for the rear.

more weight up front? just scoot your seat all the way foward before you take off ;)

people say solid motor mounts help, havent tried it yet though so im not speaking from expirience... throw some 3M window weld in them, see what happens.

Re: low budget FWD traction ideas..

Solid mounts work great if you good tires. ;D

Only draw back I have is I have solid mounts, rt-615's, and a high torque capacity clutch and I go through 2 stock cv-axles per side per year. :o

Window weld is great for motor mounts and is only $15

It takes awhile to dry though.

Re: low budget FWD traction ideas..

i actually used construction adhesive on mine.. it's REALLY solid.. there is absolutely no give whatsoever and I no longer break the 96-00 style driver side mount :)
best part is it was only about $3 for the tube

+1 no matter what kinda tire u got it wont hook with a one inch contact patch!!!

400+ whp should do the trick, then no matter how much you spin you win anyway.

you will need
1. mad vtack
2. $10,000 in overnight parts from japan
3. lots of nawwwwwwwwsssssssss

Traction bar, inserts in all 3 mounts, LSD, 205 tires...i still spin like a ----------er :6

get some drag radials :y

i used polyurethane for cement flooring in my mounts. ---- is very stiff when dries up and still doesn't vibrate when idles or driving. Proper alignment is needed, too.

super stiff rear will only UNLOAD the front tires on a hard launch.

Need some squat.

Uh, I think you got that backwards. Squatting the rear would shift weight off the front tires.....Wouldn't it ???

no if the rear doesn't squat a little than it acts like a pivot point and lifts the front a little.
stiff is good, but too stiff is bad.
there is a reason they have shocks and springs in the rear. if totally stiff was best they would just have a solid rear end.

Lower your tire pressure, that might help you hook up a little better.

As for traction bars, what car do you have?

Post pics of your car. I want to see how the tires sit on the ground. You're the sort of hardcore ----------er who should do better than that./
/

/

Most of you understand the need for traction bars, and stiff motor mounts. I'll skip over those details./
/
Guys, a correct alignment isn't going to be a stock alignment. For corner carving a little extra negative camber is generally good, but when you're a straight line hero... with the motley assortment of parts on the market... your actual alignment is all over the place. The biggest concerns are going to be how high the front end lifts under power - watch videos and estimate this amount of lift, as your alignment guy needs to set your camber to zero at this lift, and when resting your camber is wherever the ---- it wants to be. *this makes a bigger difference than tire compound for some cars*/
/
The next thing I'd worry about is spring rates and shocks. You might get the spring rates right - there are honestly a large spectrum of rates that can work, or be made to work in the hands of a good driver - but 98% of the shocks out there are complete crap. You want front shocks with no compression resistance and very stiff rebound, the rear shocks need to have a lot of compression resistance and very mild rebound. This is why some FWD cars go 6.0's in the 1/8th with no wheelie bars, it's also not going to feel great in a curve. Most of the $600-1000 suspension packages on the market are crap that won't help you with this. KYB AGXs adjustments do nothing, and the high dollar ----- suspensions whose adjustments do work aren't valved for drag racing. The rich man's solution is to pay a suspension guy $2500 to valve and dyno some shocks. I know of three affordable methods involving various degrees of R&D, since exactly no one sent me donor struts to R&D on I'm just mentioning it to taunt you./
/
There are other things that add to the traction package. Stiffening the chassis by re-welding seams (stitch welds, not continuous!), adding bracing like cages or by triangulating the A-pillar to the forward frame rail that the motor + trans mounts come off of, etc. Beam rear ends lose weight, and if you haven't the best shock valving they make controlling the rear end a lot simpler with common gear.

There is a guy selling almost a complete traction bar kit on FS section, I think it was a lakewood for a good price too 120 shipped. Go for 300 plus shipping on ebay. Traction bars will help alot

JD, don't forget toe change when the nose comes up, ZERO toe after all deflection is accounted for.

Good info JD, as always.. I will look into a proper alignment.

How do you actually get this done? go to a normal tire place and tell them I want an alignment setup for straight line minimal lift in the front?

ya, its been aligned after being lowered, but not accounting for lift when launching. it has a little negative camber when resting, but less than a degree IIRC. ill post pics a bit later when i feel like going out in the garage and taking some :P

CRX or ED chassis Civic on 24.5" slicks the fender gap should be at ~0.5" when resting, and camber around -1.5 degrees, maybe more. The car I'm thinking of has a camber kit and still needed the UCAs modified for more camber, not everything is going to be the same between all cars because - as you know - there's 1,001 different suspension combos out there. So, your mileage may vary and your CRX is going to be a little different but if you have wheelspin on the street at the common ~325-350 whp D16's make on pump gas there's something off somewhere.

You will more than likely need camber kits for the front and you can use washers in the rear. Hondas dont have stock camber adjustments. Try to go to a good gemini. THey do 12k 12 month alignments so you can have it done as many times as needed in that time

ya with my 24.5" slicks, i had to raise the coilovers a bit and i could barely fit a finger in there, so i think the height is fine. as for the 1.5* negative camber, im less than that. if i remember correctly, it was between .5-.7*

maybe ill look into some adjustable upper joints to make more negative camber. but as for suspension im just running some Tokico HPs and GC coilovers, nothing special

sewell94 12-27-2008 08:12 AM

Re: low budget FWD traction ideas..

I always do 1/2 degree negative camber, 1/8 toe in, and add a bunch of caster,

but it doesn't matter how good the alignment, suspension, or tires are if you have a worn-out bushings and bad joints everywhere. One of the best investments you can do is spend a few hundred bucks on new ball joints, tie rods, and energy suspension bushings.

key is realizing that you are going to spin with any kinda power but that there is a difference between spinning/going nowhere and actually having forward momentum while spinning.

Ah NO, CDM = fail. Why are you going to put cdm parts in really important places :S. If you want good/ cheap parts spend a bit more and get it from rockauto.com

Re: low budget FWD traction ideas..

I have friends who installed some rockauto bushings and joints, all on normal beater vehicles. One out of three kits has a ball joint that dies in under 1000 miles, the rest seem to do okay. I doubt it'd last like OEM, but on a beater it might work for a bit if you had to... :l
