Low Boost Setting....FMIC vs SMIC
if your running low boost 5-10 psi.....is a FMIC in need? i mean All "factory" turbo cars most have SMIC and i was thinking if they do it and its safe and reliable.....then why not do the same..... YES it doenst have the BLING factor but it still does the job. teh dsm SMIC is good for like 20 psi and a lot of DSM gusy use them forever, my buddy had 99gsx and hit 13's with SMIC and then he got greddy FMIC and was same tiem no power or time increase.........so anybody have any otherviews or ideas???

Re:Low Boost Setting....FMIC vs SMIC
i'm looking for easy, cheaper, and effinct (sp) not huge power i've been there done that

Re:Low Boost Setting....FMIC vs SMIC
There was no power increase becuase the SMIC was still in its efficiency level. A FMIC is necessary if you want to make some real horsepower. I ran a 13.8 without an intercooler and I ran a 13.4 with a FMIC. The intercooler increased the boost from 7.8 to 8.5psi.
A SMIC would be perfect for low boost but I would only consider it temporary because you'll always want more power |
Re:Low Boost Setting....FMIC vs SMIC
My friend with a GSX was running like 18PSI with his stock sidemount so they must work pretty good. I'll be using one on my project but its gonna be a ghetto "front" SMIC ::)

Re:Low Boost Setting....FMIC vs SMIC
Some people think that the bigger the better...WRONG. You have to size the intercooler to your application. Remember that it takes power to force all that charge air through the intercooler and t here will be pressure drop acorss it. If this power is higher then the power gained by cooler temp it will actually hurt performace. FMIC with long tubes compared to side mounts with shorter tubes and more rowscreate a lot more pressure drop.
Oh yeah, and anthoer thing that I always hear...intecooler effecincy is not the only gage on how well it will perform. The effeciency number is calculated by measuring how close to ambient temp it cools the charge by, not how free flowing it is. Immagine a VERY restrictive HUGE intercooler. It will have an effecincy tclose to 100% but will kill performence because of the pressure drop. |
