Default looking for turbo kit building assistance on my toyota

well, when it comes to turbos, im rather dumb, but learn quick.

okay, what i have is a '85 toyota 4by4, which is driven by a sohc 2.4, stock comp at 9.0:1 which isnt too unfriendly with low boost (internals can handle 350hp reliably) BUT this motor is rather weaksauce when it comes to power, as toyota designed it for lowend and long term service, which gives me a whopping 93hp factory stock, probably more like 80 at the wheels. power is max at 4800, and torque hovers around 2800-3200. what im looking for is a good (quality/durable) turbo that can get me boosted before my torque curve peak (this is not raced, i want highway oomph, and off road oomph) so gettingh boost quick, would be nice. from what i know, a t25 is small, but seems like it may be what im looking for, is under 200hp possible with getting insta boost?

oh by the way, this truck isn't fuel injected, i have hundreds of options either way, id like to NOT go fuel injected as i don't have the resources at hand to convert (very VERY little options in my area when it comes to EFI toyota pickups, i've only seen two in the past 5 years)

thanks nignogs

This is just my opinion, but I think you could probly get that little extra alot easier by doing other stuff. I.E. porting the head, tuning the carb, see if mabe thier are cams out for this motor (at least worth a try) Everyone that I've known personally that has boosted anything carbed has not been too happy with the result after doing alot of work.

OK, now that I'm done being totally unsupportive of your idea, I'll try and help. I think a regular T3 would probly work a little better than the T25. The T25 really is very small (even for a 1.5L) You will acually end up choking exhaust flow because the turbine is sooo small.
(torquey <= is this even a word? anyway, torquey motors need lots of air at low RPMs)
I think a volvo turbo would work great for you. If I remember correctly, there are lots of them around with a .42/.48 setup that would work great for that size motor.

www.lcengineering.com is pretty much the ONLY good place to get toyota performance, as their level of quality/performance is unmatched. and they make cams that are good for a 20% hp boost over stock cam, plus a bunch of turbo/supercharger kits, stroker kits, etc. but they are probably the most expensive. you get what you pay for!

i have no problem with buying a cam, i'm already saving up for a stage 2-3 cam, not sure which im gonna get, because if i can't find a turbo im just throwin in some 11:1 pistons and sidedrafts if all else fails

I agree a T3 .42 .48 would work good for low end grunt and hold till 5-5500rpm where the 22R dies off.The only tuff part is gonna be the carb setup.I dont know how you setup a carb like that for blowthrough. Why dont you just pick up a EFI swap from one of the Toy forums calssifieds?Talk to JDM4G63T on here he is the Toy 4x4 boosting guy. That or buy his truck which i really want myself.I had a couple Toy's a 82 carb and a 85 carb and doing all motor ---- is a waste of time.Even with a Weber carb,Offy manifold, cam, header, shaved head etc etc and 5:29 gears it still sucked.Boost or a 4.3V6 is the only thing that is gonna give you the fat tourqe down low you need.

I agree with the previous posts about the Turbo size and ditching the carb. You will need to swap the carb to give you the needed fuel anyways. I would look into an EFI system even if you didnt go boosted. Could use a setup off a EFI version of your motor or even better a MegaSquirt or something like it with stock 22r FI components, its a real easy install if your just using it for fuel. I AM assuming that they made a 22R-E..?
Than you would be free to turbo the **** out of it. Remember that most of your components are much more stressed by Revs than Power, so a 2.4l still has a lot of HP/Literage to be gained.

toyota made the 22R (base carb)

22RE (efi)

22REC (cali emissions, not good)

and the godsend 22RTE (efi turbo, with a ct26, this motor is **** if found)

but finding a 22RTE mani is gonna run about the cost of a turbo NEW from the manuf itself, they're a good find if you get one cheap. otherwise, youre fucked. also ct26 = t3 flange. and a carb will supply as much fuel as needed, just re-jet

going to EFI will pretty much require a new wiring harness. which i will need along with everything else. and i dont have that stuff, so this is why im interested in going carb'd turbo. theres plenty of v8's runnin around with highhats stuffin boost down the carb to begin with

Swapping over the carb and tuning it seems like a big enough project in itsself though...

Doing a blow through is def doable its just finding out what needs to be modded to so it will accept being pressurized.Setting up a Holley is easy but I dont know where to find info on how to setup up the OE Mikuni or whatever is stock carb on those.

aisin carb. i'd pretty much need to fuel pressure to kick in more (7psi or so) after idle, so im not running 10:1 stoich at idle
