Default just a thought

I know I don't have a lot of posts here, but I'm not new to imports. What I have noticed is something I think should be addressed. Before I say what I have to say I just want to make it clear I'm not trying to flame or cause a big argument; I understand that forums such as this one are here to help others out.

Here's what I have seen a lot of, and I have to ask :

Why would you try to turbo your car if you dont know what a pcv valve, compression, a sleeve, a ring or any other mechanical part of an engine is? I have seen countless posts not just on this site, with people asking for help with their turbo setup when they dont know regular maintenance on their cars?

I just was thinking about this and was wondering if anyone else felt the same.

I agree, if you can't even change your own oil, you should not be looking at HMT. If you want to lear, start from the basics, because even though a HMT is fairly easy to install if you don't knoe how to use tools you're going to break something. Like all the guys that come in and their first post is something like What do I need to make my car Turbo? but then they get mad when people tell them to search.

I can agree to a certain extent. I have little to know mechanical inclination, and before I set out to boost my car I never even opened the hood myself. Once I made the decision to go turbo I set out to learn how to do all this stuff, and then I did it. Even more so though, having done this project has given me a good base of knowledge and confidence to undertake other projects on my car (as well as do my own maintenance), and with each one I do I gain more understanding and experience. I agree with davcivic in that the problem is with people coming onto sites and expecting the users to provide them with everything short of doing the install for them. I decided I wanted to turbo my car in Jan. of this year, and I finally did so about 8 months later. I think that 6-8months worth of reading, searching, and assembling parts is a realistic goal for non-automotive type people to set for a project like this, not 2 weeks.

i think that all these people who ask how to turbo their car and don't even know how to change the plugs won't end up doing it anyways.

Why would anyone want to turbo thier car without knowing the basics? I don't know, but they probably aren't reading this.

Ill tell you why...

Because we arent all born with common sense or with mechanical inclination. We all went to school but not all of us got the same education. This is a place to learn...to ask questions....and to share information.I consider my self a verry mechanically inclined person and thats why Im in the position Im in at my work.Yet I have never built an engine and Im kind of intimidated by the thought of tackeling that project by my self.
People that cant change there own oil arent stupid. They just never gave a thought of how to perform that task.Or werent intrested in working on there own cars. But you have to lern somewhere.I have older brothers that tought me alot. Some people arent so fortunate. But if they ask instead of pretending they are some "now it all jackass" I will respect them for having enough sense to ask instead of draining the transmission and putting the oil in the radiator!

Thats my exact situation. My dad taught my how to do plumbing, dry wall, electrical, and so on. I pretty much could tackle any home project within reason. But my dad always had bad experiances with cars so he would never touch them. That is the reason i lack knowledge on how to do anything with a car. There is a difference between reading on a website on how to do anything with a car and sitting down with someone and them doing it with you. Im personally afraid to touch my brakes because of this reason. Ive read numerous artciles on the internet, own a chiltons, and have researched it, but i know if i ---- it up, and my car decides not to stop correctly it could cause serious problems. If i did it once with someone, i would feel fine doing it again. Also, i was going to do a turbo project because i thought of it as an advanced bolt on the allowed me to stay away from the engine and i figured i could handle that. But the more and more i looked into it (after buying 75% of the parts) i got scared because ----...i dont know what im doing and if something starts leaking or just general maintaince....im screwed. So i think you have to just be willing to sit down and teach people like myself and others. Thats just my opinion on the subject

Well said.

I had a friend that got all the ----- in the world and everybody loved him. He was very cool and fun to be around. For some reason he was just a popular guy. It might have had something to do with the massive amounts of drugs the guy always had, but anyways, he had no idea how to do any form of work on his car. He had to ask me or some of the "friends/customers" to help him with stuff. He kinda blew me off for a while and stopped coming around because I was no longer a "friend/customer" and he only came around to ask me to fix his car(DSM, Eclipse). Well, I told him to ---- himself because I was sick of him using me for my mechanical genius mind(j/k) and he attempted to change his own oil. Well, he drained the tranny fluid(manual)and added 5 quarts of motor oil and drove to Vegas(200-250 miles). He called me up on his way back(Yes he actually made it there)and said the tranny won't stay in gear and the motor is running like ----. After a LONG conversation trying to figure out what he did, I figured it out. Some people just lack those certain skills. I don't look down on those people, I look down on those that are not willing to learn and take some initiative.

I guess mechanical inclination really has nothing to do with the desire for increased performance and "coolness" that comes from FI. I'm sure most of those guys would just pay someone $4-5k to drop in a kit if they could, but being 16, broke and naive they decide to try to piece something together. I can relate, I'm mostly broke too (altho not that young or naive I hope ), so I can understand their wide-eyed and clueless enthusiasm. But yeah, they definately need to read some stuff first. If they can't read, then they definately don't need to completely rework the intake and exhaust and fuel systems of their car. It isn't gonna stop, so I guess we'll just have to keep patiently pointing them in the right direction. ----> *search*

when i started out i didn't even know how to change my own oil. my dad(mechanic) died when i was 1. since then i lived with my mom and little sister. I had no one to teach me how to do anything. I had to learn everything by myself. i started asking questions in forums and reading articles. Now i have done 3 motor swaps, rebuilt 2 engines and the list goes on and on. it's really not as hard as i thought it would be. no one is born knowing everything about cars, you have to learn from someone else, which is why we ask questions in forums. IMO
