Just got my turbo on!

Hey guys i'm finally boosted! small wrx turbo, hf manifold, dsm 450's, uberdata, 1gdsm smic, 1gdsm bov, 2.5" dp, etc. I just have one question though. My car is overheating a lot once I start boosting. Also coolant is coming out of my overflow resivour. Anybody know why this is? My car never did this before until now. Could it be because i'm running my smic inside the engine bay sitting right near where the cai hole is? I know that is a shitty place to have it, but the guy i bought all of my stuff from had the charge pipes ran to that position. I will be getting a fmic and new charge pipes as soon as possible

Re:Just got my turbo on!

that shouldnt be the problem why you over heat.....maybe try not running the coolant lines and just use the oil

If your not already run your fan to a switch so you can turn it on when you want like start up. This should help out alot

Re:Just got my turbo on!

I am just using the oil lines for right now so i know its not that. I was boosting really high at first because my wastegate actuator was adjusted really funny. It was climbing around 12-13psi :-\. I eventually got my boost down to 8psi by adjusting the actuator, but now i got this damn overheating problem . You think i could have blown my headgasket while boosting so high? I ran it a few times with the high boost...the boost was addicting :P. I didn't notice any oil in my coolant or anything. I'm guessing its the headgasket though because i wasn't overheating at all before i boosted the car.

head gasket for sure

Re:Just got my turbo on!

are you loosing coolant at all? if your not dripping then its the headgasket.. if its a coolant line busted off or is cracked you will overheat... as long as it didn't go up most the way it won't be the HG... but if you did go up HIGH on temp then you blew your HG anyway from overheating.

more info plz

Re:Just got my turbo on!

also do you have pressure in the top radiator hose after running the car for a little bit??? if not.. you have a cracked coolant line someplace most likely (happened to me). or maybe the thermostat isn't letting enough coolant pass?

any symptoms on start up.. does it sputter at first then acts fine? if so then its def. your headgasket.

Re:Just got my turbo on!

Same thing happened to me, i know its my headgasket though, motors out, waiting for a new block to get here, and im dressing up the engine bay, But yeah, sucks when ---- like this happens, do you think its possible to have warped the head or block from letting the temp rise above normal a few times, its gone above 3/4's up, but oly for a second or two. I dont want to have to get it resrfaced, the head, but i might have to.

Re:Just got my turbo on!

same ---- happened to me. it just bubbles. maybe you got air bubbles in your cooling system. bleed it and see what happens. my car used to just fill up the overflow tank. and then when i stop. i pour the water back in and its full again. it doesnt lose water. all the water that left the radiator went into the over flow. my headgasket was still cherry. till this day i dont know what it is. my motor took a ---- on me before i could find out. but im guessing air bubbles. bleed the system. there should be a bleeder valve on top of the housing where your top radiator hose goes to. bleed it out and see what happens. i hope this helps u

Re:Just got my turbo on!

yea the coolant comes out of the overflow resivior when boosting. I was even up in the h a couple of times :-[. I'm pretty damn sure its the headgasket.

Re:Just got my turbo on!

take off the head and see whats up. could be the oddest things. cause ill refill my radiator back up and it'll be okay till i drive for like 30 or 40 mins then it'll start to climb when i come to a stop. its odd. i dont know why its pushing water out of my radiator. like theres too much pressure in the cooling system. like air bubbles or something never go to doing it. since im a lazy ---- but yeah i hope u figure out your problem. good luck!!

Re:Just got my turbo on!

alright now i'm really confused. I took my car out tonight to see how it was running. I started boosting to see if the temp would rise. At first i noticed no rise in temp at all so i got on it hard for a little bit and still no rise. Then i just romped on it for like the next 5 minutes. Still no temperature rise.... Then I decide to go home so i turn into my neighborhood and am driving slow and not boosting at all. All of a sudden my temp gauge just raises all the way to 3/4. WTF is up with this? Shouldn't it just be doing it while I'm boosting?

Re:Just got my turbo on!

It's your headgasket...My car didn't overheat, but everytime I boosted above 11psi my overflow tank sprayed coolant everywhere. I was boosting 15 psi when going above 6000 rpm's...
It's deffinately your headgasket if it'sdoing strange like that....there is air in your coolant system now....get the air out and retorque your head....torque it to 58 lb.fft or 60

Re:Just got my turbo on!

yea i'm going to try to get the airbubbles out today. I just haven't had much time to fool around with it between school, work, and my gf. I'm gonna retorque the headbolts this weekend.

BoosTedZSix 05-13-2004 12:55 PM

Re:Just got my turbo on!

mine did exactly what yours did. boost around and everything and no temp rise. until you slow down and drive slower. like what semnos said. get the bubbles out and retorque your head.

Re:Just got my turbo on!

I've never had it happen since boosting, but before that it did do it, ran the car for a little while and it would overheat and start bubling(sp) on the reservoir tank. My problem was a bad rad cap. Cheap fix. I would, if you haven't yet, I didn't read the whole thing, get a new cap, and retorque the head, see what happens.

Re:Just got my turbo on!

thanks for all the help guys. I'm going to retorque the head and all that stuff this weekend. I just haven't had time with work and all...i've just been driving my beater truck around for now. Besides...if i drove my car around all day i'd get pulled over...its open downpipe until i get a flange hooked up to my downpipe and its freaking loud as ----. I tried getting some of the bubbles out today by taking the cap off and letting the car run for about 15 minutes...and i also refilled the radiator with some water. I just didn't have time to let it bleed long enough because i had to run to work.

Lol
I feel ya man....my GF is holding me back to.
These last two weeks I didn't do anything to the car and I have a broken ringland for sure....piston rings 2 and 3 aren't good....they're letting oil thru....just sucks

haha damn dude.

Re:Just got my turbo on!

alright i blead the coolant system and drove around for a while...my car was still doing the fluctuating temp thing, but when I checked my overflowtank it wasn't full like before. Shouldn't my tank have had coolant being pushed into it again?

sohc_mshue 05-18-2004 07:49 AM

Re:Just got my turbo on!

ok so now i checked my radiator and it was bone dry. Also i have a small amount of oil on top of my #1 piston :(.

Re:Just got my turbo on!

That is your headgasket. Have your head resurfaced. and get a new head gasket. Your head might be warped which caused your headgasket to go bad. This is what happened to my car. But mine just leaks oil on the outside. I retorqued my head But I never clean off the oil to see if it was still dripping I am going to do that today.I will tell you if that fixed mine.

sohc_mshue 05-18-2004 01:20 PM

Re:Just got my turbo on!

yea i retorqued my head and they were all to spec so i guess thats not helping anything. :-\. I think that oil on my piston is probably a piston ring or something...
