installed customcoach intercooler. now lost 2psi w/better pics now

sup guyz i just got done installin a customcoach intercooler. first of all it looks very beautiful. and goin from non intercooled setup to intercooled man my car is much faster, and smoother. and i went from 2' piping to 2.5'. dont get me wrong i love this intercooler. well worth my money. but one thing i lost two psi. i was boostin 5 psi non-intercooled w/ 2' piping. now im boost only 3 psi with 2.5' piping w/intercooler and i checked all the clamps and everything all tight. even tightened my wastegate. do u guyz think im losin boost cuz of the intercooler or cuz of the piping? or a leak somewhere?

now with better pics enjoy!!

Well I believe when you install an i/c it'll have a pressure drop. Also, where the hell are the pics!?!? I need to get a cheap i/c for my set up

Some pressure drop will happen with any intercooler, especialy one that big. Your larger charge pipes probably have something to do with it. Look at all the extra space the turbo has to pressurize now. That's quite a change.

If it bothers ya that much make one of those homemade boost controllers and crank it up 2 psi heh.

Re:installed customcoach intercooler. now lost 2psi

You say the car is faster and smoother, but you lost boost? :-\ It sound to me like your boost gauge is giving you a false reading, if you really lost two pounds of boost it would feal slower. Where did you hook you gauge to? it should be on the intake or as close to the throtle body as possible to get the exact preasure going in to the motor. Don't hook it in line with anything like a blow off valve or boost controller.
There is allways some pressure drop in the system, but two pounds is a lot, it's usually about a half pound or so on these intercoolers, plus a little for piping(usually to small to measure). Since you didnt say anything about turbo lag I will asume you dont have any leaks, a leak will cause a lot of lag. Double check that boost gauge and let me know what you find. Try another gauge or add a hand held vacume/boost guage and go for a ride.

hmm the vacuum line is alone right on the manifold. its not on with the bov, fmu etcetc. but i dunno ill try to figure this out. but guy trust me the intercooler it looks very nice. imma wash my car right quick and have pics for ya soon :) yeah i know it sounds weird but even though its boostin lower psi its way faster than 5 psi non intercooled. can anyone back me up on this? from my experience last night and drivin my car non intercooled for a long while i noticed that. well pics are soon to come. wont be good quality but my friend took pics of my car with his bad ass digi and waitin on them but if u wanna see some temp pics ill take some with my shitty one haha well any more help would be appreciated on this situation. once again very nice intercooler. for the price and diy piping i saved a bundle :) total spend on intercooler setup=$375 thats a price on just a damn spearco intercooler lol.. thanks for the good deal customcoach. latez

Re:installed customcoach intercooler. now lost 2psi

It probably is faster since the intake temperature has dropped. If anything it's safer and more efficient. Now you can crank it up to 8psi!! ;)

Very nice. Why did you put the steelies back on? Everything looks good. I don't like the OBX manifold though, but it looks nice. That intercooler looks bitchn'. You need a better camera though. :-X :)

I got pressure drop too with the customcoach, but i gess thats normal because these are pretty large. i just connected my wastegate to a vacum line on the intake manifold instead of the turbo to the wastegate and got my psi back. now i just had a bit more lag. hey TYPER is that LACR in those pics??

typer 06-29-2003 09:31 PM

Re:installed customcoach intercooler. now lost 2psi

:) yep thats at lacr.. back when i was non turboed ls. ran shitty. ran 16.0 all motor and with non intercooler setup i ran 14.2 stock tires not hookin up. immma go to fontana in bout two weeks and imma slick down and hopefully have my msd 6al with 2 step in cuz my launches suck ass. lol.

Re:installed customcoach intercooler. now lost 2psi

wanna get rid of the pressure drop? this works with most turbos. instead of picking up the wastegate pressure from the compressor housing, cap that off at the housing and get the pressure reading directly off the intake. i did this little trick on my turbo supra and it has alot more midrange power now. it keeps your wastegate closed longer, until you get the actual pressure built up in the intake.

Re:installed customcoach intercooler. now lost 2psi

ok soo.. do i use the boost line or vacuum line? cuz the turbonectics delta gate has two lines a boost one and a vacuum one which one do i block off and which one do i T to the intake?

WOW! 14.2 at lacr is dam good. the best it did was 15.2 at 8psi on my old turbo. it wouldnt spool until second. i changed that turbo now and i m hoping for better times.and hell ya my luanches suck ass. >:(

exhaust wrap on your charge pipes? are you using al or steel? i think they leave al exposed to dissipate heat..

I really like the way that looks man! my car is basically the some appearance wise, except I have a tyrus intercooler and spoon mirrors, my rs lip is even black too. I am runnin a b16a under the hood. sweet ride man!

Re:installed customcoach intercooler. now lost 2psi w/better pics now

you know it might be worth your while to keep it exposed, thats unless you think your ic brings your charge temp to ambient, which i doubt. the reason being while youre moving, underhood temps are pretty close to ambient. so instead of letting moving air cool the pipes youre holding it in with that wrap. youre better off using it to wrap the manifold to aid in spool and just make a heatshield between the turbo and any piping.

Re:installed customcoach intercooler. now lost 2psi w/better pics now

I would run your boost line at least to a fitting on the charge piping near the thottle body, since you have an external wastegate. that should do the trick.
