Is there any way for me to tell if i have a ball bearing turbo or a floater pin turbo.
THe guy on egay told me it was a ball bearing turbo.
Its oil and liquid cooled.
Its marked IHI RFB5 VI34 the exhaust housing had a 52 - 24R on it
This I replaced with a 52-12R so basiclly its a big bad **** turbo with an exhaust housing half the size of the orignal one.
I cant complain the thingpops the waste gate in idle if we blip the throtel and she has pulled over 18 PSI at 6500 RPM.
Dam now I have to wait till somebody does a how to on the Ball bearing turbo

The RHB5 VI 34 is a floating bearing and comes on the Isuzu Impulse. Same turbo as the Warner Ishi on the T Bird turbocoupe.

Why are you writing RFB5?

Sorry for the Typo its a RHB5 VI34.
WHat does floating bearing mean is it diffirent from the bearing type used in your rebuild are the individual pices avalible seprate say I just need a set of snap rings cause everything else seems ok.

Also in the diagram its not clear if the turbo has water cooling or not.
DO all VI34s have water cooling. ? Mine does.

It's the same bearing type. It sits in the middle of the center cartrige rather than ball bearing style. Most of them from that era are water cooled.

My understanding of turbos was you have ball bearing type and non ball bearing type. Non ball bearing type used Bronze bushes.
ball bearing type spun up faster and worked better.

So what type is this VI34.
I only noticed two wear points on my shaft. Where it passed thru the bronze collar.

Marking the nut postion and puting it back exactlly like you took it off. Is the shaft still balanced ?.

What does the Balancing machine look like. How does it work you got a pic.
SOmbodys going to need to get one in this country sooner or latter.

You need to mark the wheels relative to each other to put em back together right.

Provided that it is still balanced in the first place. But yes, you're on the right track. The VI34 is a floating bearing type, I've already told you. As far as a the machine, you can do it yourself with an ordinary lathe.
