i would say t3/t4 for a gsr.... all depends on what manifold u use. i used a .42/.48 t3 on my ls about a year ago and it would spool nicee at low rpm but lost power at highr rpm's, im using a to4e right now and it works just great shoot for someting larger with a gsr. just find a manifold that will allow you to retain AC with a larger turbo.

Don't say that all 42/48 garretts are smaller than the VJ11. You can have a 50 or 60 trim compressor in a .42 A/R housing and it will flow much better than the IHI RHB5 VJ11 unit.
