Can my timing be retarded by turning the distributer?
Do I lossen the bolts and use a protractor? Looking at the top of the distributor, which way do I twist to make my engine "special". :) |

loosen the 3 bolts that hold the distributor, rotate it clockwise (towards the front of the car) to retard, opposite way to advance

woah wait a minute, counterclockwise is to retard, clockwizew to advance.so if u want to retard it turn it towards the rear of the car. some one correct me if im wrong.

Correct, but you also need to jump the service connector wires together before you move the distributor. After you jump the wires and set the timing, remove the jumper and turn the car off. Otherwise it will not save your settings.

yeah I'm a little confused... what are the service wires? I flashed a light @ my timing marks the other day just for shits and giggles and neither the red or white line that showed up lined up with the little /\ mark that is there.... I'm confused. Is there somthing that needs to be disconnected to check the timing properly? What's proper procedure for judging if your are right on and how much your moving it?

You don't need to do anything to check it. Hook the timing light up to the #1 cylinder spark plug wire and neg-neg pos-pos. Point it at the pulley and BOOM.
EDIT: Oh yeah, the service wires are located under the dash on the passenger side. It is in a green sleeve and has two wires in it. You need to jump the two together before you start the car and before you turn the ignition on. I have read through this post, and I still don't understand WHY we need to jump these "service wires". By the way, it's the same wire that you "jump" in order to get the error code LED to tell you what codes are on, if your engine light goes on right? What do the wires have to do with the timing? What can get screwed up if you don't "jump" these wires? |

yeah, kind of, i usually just use a paper clip to connect(jump) the two wires

When the service jumper is grounded the ECM stops adjusting timing. on 4g's they are located in the driverside below the shock tower (near the main mount)
