Default I need turbo rebuild advice

About a year ago, I bought a T3 Super 60 from a friend of mine and it did me some good for awhile. But, the other day i noticed that the turbo was leaking oil from the bearing housing. My greatest guess is that the turbo needs a rebuild. I checked all the lines and gaskets and the final conclusion was the bearings and rings in the turbo are worn. I really want to take it upon myself to do a rebuild. I don't wanna go down without a fight or a rebuild. I found a basic kit off ebay on what i need for 40$. I know rebuilding is a delicate thing. What i want to know is that if i cleaned everything and took my time and replaced everything the way they should be, would i be ok? What about balance? I really don't wanna buy a new turbo if i don't have to.

I believe they need to be balanced, which means you have to send it off if there aint a local place

You need to get it balanced. Where are you located? I am in SoCal and I know that CarCraft in Riverside and Performance Techniques in San Bernardino do it.

You can do the rebuild then have them balance it. I think it costs somewhere from like $50-$100 depending on who does it. Check, on H-T (honda-tech.com) and ask in the f/i forum if anyone knows if there is someone in your area who can do it for you. Or you can just ask your local performance shop if they know someone. Well I'm not 100% sure but i believe if you are very careful and mark the shaft and the wheel you will be able to re-assemble it without getting it balanced. To balance it they just shave metal off the compressor wheel so I believe since it was balanced once and you assemble it that exact way you should be ok. Not 100% sure but logically seems right, HTH...Matt

i rebuilt a t25 a little while back, its pretty simple just be VERY carefull not to strip any bolts! the bolts in the midsection are very weak for some reason. Oh and snap rings are from the devil!! but fortunately i dont think t3's have em, and about balancing before you take off the compressor wheel and mark one of the blades, follow an invisable line untill you get to the other wheel and mark it so the 2 marks are lined up. Good Luck!
