It's a good website with a lot of info on how to do this step by step. He used a 1/2 inch adapter. I would not go smaller than this.

Also, make sure you don't mount the fitting too low. And, try to mount the fitting right in front of a rod. I heard you could restrict the flow if the oil is trying to return with a rod spinning in its path.
WTF did you guys do to this thread? 
IMO, this fitting is too small:
You might want to use a larger diameter for the nipple part.
