About as home made as they come.
Sturdy POS tho,as everything within the engine is stock(just modded stock pieces).
Sports a Schwitzer 364E and runs as a daily beater.

Stock block.Never touched.
Stock forged crank
Stock forged con rods
OEM forged Mahles turned down by 1,2mm in the lathe for a true static of 9,2
Ported OEM head and 2*38in and 2*33 out
My "own" cams-set at 109deg LCA 3 deg ahead.10,25 lift

Boost is set to 1,2 bars(divide by 0,068 to get psi)

Intake is a rip off of the old Audi "sports" intakes with a sort of diffusor plenum.
Stock TB.Just reworked to fit the TPS and placing(throttle wire asf)
Cooler is homebrewn from an old spearco.

Injectors are a set of Siemens Deka 630 run at 5,5 bars=800cc+
..and the engine makes good use of the fuel they deliver as i run outta DC at current boost.

Clutch is a modded stock flywheel with a Sachs/bimmer 618 pressure plate and a KEP 4 puck sinter.
Box is a stock Getrag 275Z(dogleg)
Rearend..stock 16V with 3,07 gearing

Low 11s@118-120 on the slicks.
The thing is tho...its put together for "nightly" events and to beat the living ---- outta the sport bikes out on the open freeway over here(scandinavia)
..and to tell you the truth that OEM POS mercedes 5 link rear does a helluva job gettin the power to the ground even out in abandoned industrial areas at night.
Likewise,no track prep in the shots above either.
Put another way?
My hat´s off to the sauerkraut eaters as far as putting that crap together.
Another thingy.Where i live..this is considered a cheap car to play around with. Its sorta domestic to us.

Yes.
Its the "fabled" cosworth engine.
The 2,3-16.
The one merc had cossie develop to go racing.
Funny thing is,like i wrote, that they to us over here are fairly cheap to work on-and they indeed take to the boost like nothing you´ve ever imagined.

Its a hopped up "claimed" ex works EVO1 gettin its ass handed to it.
Merc is on the regular radials tho,so i get beat like a damn outdated stamp outta the hole-but no matter as i hit second.

Also notice how relatively silent it is.
Has changed that since with a damn flowmaster-that im gonna toss the ---- off the car at first poss to be replaced by a apple racing one.

Nother one.
Against one of the turbo bricks.
Sorry to say..the run was plagued by misfires out the ass due to the main wire of the MSD coming lose.
None the less.
Gives an idea how the car hooks, even on regular unprepped asphalt.

Re: I´m SOOOOO not from around here..Noob or not

Whats more.
Around here we use fairly large huffers for our dailys.
Reasons are that they "trickle" out the back door of Scania and Volvo.
The one i use for instance is really for a 415hp 6 liter diesel-and the old average rule applies that a diesel consumes approx 80% more air than its gas equivalent.Ergo sum-sorta.

Further,we´ve learned that by building the engines up as were they fairly stoutly tuned NA engine-apart from compression,we also get away with LARGE turbine ARs and cams that are "NA" as well.
After ------ around with primary pipe layout for ages..we sorta got the bigger style huffers to work.

Positives are for instance..that we can keep levels of boost down. Some of the engine setups will swallow air in a manner that the huffer gasps for it anyways.
Even the old iron sled Volvo B20 engine run in the low/mid 10s in street trim in Volvo 140 series cars-and this indeed in fairly tight budgets.

Hte merc for instance..the schwitzer..200 new.A chinese Tial rippoff from the local e-bay another 100..an old intercooler element and some TIG welding..
In fact, the whole project per se including overhaul of the rear axle, slicks, tow diff turbos, two setups of injectors and our "homebrewn" VEMS box(www.vems.se) ECU has set me back approx 2000 bux all in all.
Aint to bad seing the performance and true every day driver status.

Buuut..as usual it all goes to hell in a handbasket, and seing the potential of the engine im gonna put together another bottom end for it at the shop and elevate boost to see what happends.
This..entails our home made con rods in the bridgeport and some Mahles for a Volvo and a 3 disc sintered Sachs to cope with the power.
Aiming..for 600.
Well see.
One thing´s for sure.
Back in the late late 80 a swedish dragracer by the name of Kjell Karlsson used th POS motor in his railed chassied Vega and ran a 7,8@330km/h(205mph)
That..tells that the power is there to be had at least.

Holy... Is that a Nova that did mid 12?! What engine has that got?

Racing 10-24-2006 06:21 PM

Re: I´m SOOOOO not from around here..Noob or not

Absolutely no idea if its called a nova in the US,around here theyre called corsa.
Engine is the 16V 2 liter that opel and english vauxhall uses. Also fairly common as a restrictor engine in certain formula classes around europe.
Vesa btw..was within the crew that sent Per Eklund up pikes peak in his monster SAAB a couple a yrs back.

As for the remarks.Thanx guys.

Top speed.Blew the head gasket@8880rpms in final.Simple math tell its somewhere around 190mph...fitting isnt it :8

Street bikes are hard out of the hole in the midst of night if ya aint on slicks.
The ones i use are common MTs 8*22*15s.
The give "fair" traction on the street.
So..on slicks outcome is about as a lotto ticket more or less...win some, lose some.
Out on the open freeway tho..the bikes are slaughter victims.

As far as availability of the cossie engines...they actually WERE exported to the US,but to my knowledge most of them were slushbox.

Robus.
A VEMS setup incl a Bosch LSU4 and built in MAP runs approx 800-850 bux racers net.

Salesmonkey.
Honestly?
One of the more fun things about the car..really is the settings.
See..around here we dont really get all taht much warmth(altho this summer has been outta this world).
Whatever..
The thing is...when on the open freeway and some yuppie ------- in his porsche/M3/Volvo R wont let ya by...and you mash it to pass hime sideways doin 80mph or so... O0
Now...THAT is pure entertaiment..

Speaking a which..the lettering to the right on the trunk lid says;
"Who the ---- is "R"?"

Since been replaced by;
"M this!"

Sleepers are beutiful...ya can even muster to text em out at wish with a regular ink pen without caring.. ;D

Yeah. The deltas are cool as hell.
Good friend´s got an s4(?) that he´s slowly bulding up.
Problem is-as with most badgers-the transmissions.

Around here people either use a local setup made by Fix-it,or go the full monty with X-trac stuff.
No matter, cause either way it´s some serious dollares.

lancia S4... no kidding man

Sweet Merc, those 2.3's are slow as death stock, it needs boost. Nice to hear they are robust as all hell... how much in common do they have with the non-16 2.3's?

Engine was a poor design. Not knowing anything about the turbo units, just going off stock/autocross lore from a couple friends that own them, I'd guess it's another oil pan mis-design problem. The ones that experience hard cornering have oil flow away from the pickup tube, and the air goes straight to the #2 main tearing holy hell out of the bottom end. I'd guess this al so happens under hard acceleration. They are dildo rides, owned by dildoes, nothing an engine swap won't fix if you feel up to cutting the vehicle to fit a transmission tunnel.

Racing 10-25-2006 04:17 PM

Re: I´m SOOOOO not from around here..Noob or not

KJ.
Yeah.Exactly.Also used in the formula Opel/Lotus(vauxhall/lotus) et al.

JD.
A lot i´d say.
Block,crank asf are direct swap.
That merc on their behalf claims to have changed half the motor is another story.
The crank in my engine for instance is from a regular 8V 132hp.
Main diff is the slugs and..for the early engines, the rods.
Slugs in the 16Vs(2,3s that is-there is a 2.5 as well)are forged Mahles to start with.
The early rods are shared with the same vintage 8Vs tho.

The Porsches..
What we´ve found over here is actually block shift.Guess it comes with the territory and aluminium blocked engines coupled with wet liners when boost starts to go towards the 2 bar range(divide by 0,068 tog et psi)
What´s more..the old 8V turbo engines wont flow if their lives depended on it.
All in all the "TOP" motor was a load of crap really..weak combustion chambers asf.
The 16Vs is a different story tho-altho they wont go much past 500 REAL ponies with any kind of endurance tho..due to the block being all over the place as power go up.

They are dildo rides, owned by dildoes, nothing an engine swap won't fix if you feel up to cutting the vehicle to fit a transmission tunnel.
That is VERY much true.. :6

Tom-Guy 10-25-2006 10:07 PM

Re: I´m SOOOOO not from around here..Noob or not

Sounds like the 8v engines are fed too much timing, and high freq detonation sets in and shifts bores a la D-series.

Racing 10-26-2006 07:27 PM

Re: I´m SOOOOO not from around here..Noob or not

JD.
Maybe so.
What we´ve gathered on some high boost engines is that as boost level and power goes up the liners will start to "tremble" as they reach a certain frequenzy.
This in turn will make the liners of an aluminium block engine shift-as the forces involved aint no kiddin matter.

This to a given limit holds true for the cast counterpart.

Couple a yrs back we had a rally cross Volvo engine in the dyno cell.
Just a tad over 7 grand the ehxaust values started moving around like there was no tomorrow.
It stoped dead in its track as we used block filler.
Conclusion here has to be harmonics.

Tom-Guy 10-27-2006 10:48 PM

Re: I´m SOOOOO not from around here..Noob or not

Porsche sounds exactly like what happens to the Honda D16. Free floating liners?

Racing 10-28-2006 03:39 AM

Re: I´m SOOOOO not from around here..Noob or not

Sort of.Porsche´s got sort of a regular deck,buut....none the less.

The Volvo engine is detroit wonder metal tho.

What´s more, guess you´ve at least heard about block filler(to be used with cast iron blocks) and i´ve run em on the street for yrs.No coolig issues if one thinks it through.

This winter we´re getting into another project.
My 69 camaro pro-streeter with a boosted 495cid BBC.
..and of course the block of that engine indeed is filled.
