how much hp gain from small to bigger intercooler

say you got just 8psi or so and you got a small DSM size intercooler and if you upgrade to something like greddy type 31 etc, how much would you gain? this on a Dseries making no more thna 165whp or so

No where near worth the amount of the IC. A DSM IC is MORE THAN ENOUGH for 165whp and 8psi on a 1.6L.

Remember that the DSMs made 190hp in stock forum at 12psi and they really don't see very good gains from an IC at all, unless they have the boost jacked way up and a bigger turbo.

the bigger intercooler would create more lag but would also cool the incoming air much more, and would allow you to increase boost to make up for the differance.

Not true. DSM's have a big increase of horsepower when upgrading intercoolers. Even with a stock turbo and around 15 lbs of boost.

they have the vr4 with 14b turbo gain 30.6 hp and 32.3 lbs of torque on a spearco unit. i think on a honda it will still increase hp maybe not as much.

you will NEVER see more power from an intercooler unless these things are there

1. going from a SHITTY one to a good flowing one, rare
2.boost pressure is increased
3.you have the current one maxed out and it can't flow the capibility that you need.

in this situation, or any other low boost situation similar, you will see NO power gains, and more than likely no other gain or loss what so ever.

there will NOT be more noticable lag, considering the DSM flow less than the type 31, and the type 31 is a more efficent design

don't listen to ppl that THINK they know, cause they heard/read it somewhere

You should also note that the VR4 DSM has a different IC that isn't as good as a 1G DSM IC ( I know I have 2 1G DSMs and I VR4 DSM IC ).

Vs using the VR4 IC I choose to run my car non-IC'd for a week b/c it just didn't look like it was worth the hasle to run piping for it.
Also keep in mind that the person that asked the question wasn't running 15psi like the VR4, he's only running 8psi which is almost half...

I also have to agree that the amount of lag that an IC can create is overrated, its really hard to notice a 200rpm increase in lag with a fast spooling turbo.

Re:how much hp gain from small to bigger intercooler

Huh.I allways thought that you could gain h.p. from a bigger intercooler couse you would be getting better cooling effficiency. This would of course be upgrading from a side mount to a front mount. The efficiency of the I.C depends on the air flow that cools it and we all know that cooler air makes for better combustion wich makes more horse power. With a front mount you also get the help of the radiator fan wich sucks cool air through it to help more than a side mount. The side mount in my Passat doesnt even have good air flow design. That thing gets really hot couse theres really no air that moves through it where its at.I drilled some holes in the plastic fender liner to inprove air flow but I dont know if that helped.

Think about it,a 2 row alluminum radiator will cool better than a stock plastic single row radiator.Of course a radiator wont make h.p but an intercooler is a radiator for the cahrged air.

We were speaking of the specific car he is speaking of. Now a 12+psi stock VW that has a smaller turbo than it really should ( not sure about VWs ).

Of course 2 ICs that have the same flow and effency, but one front mounted vs the other side/fender mounted will show the FMIC to be better, but the VWs and DSM cars rely on a lot of power to make them fast ( basiclly more cubic inches and more boost ), where a honda always has its light weight.

A 1.6L Sohc car at 8psi is a totally different deal than a 2.0L Dohc car at 15psi.

I know what he was asking. My point was that any car will benefit from cooler, denser charged air weather turboed or not.It wouldnt be a drastic amount but in small engines every little counts.Im going to be getting a C.C intercooler just for the sheer "bling" factor ;D
