how to drive a boosted car
how should i drive the car as to prevent it from blowing.
it seems that some people have never ending lists of blown motors or turbos while others beat the crap of their cars and have never had a problem. i know constant fifth gear boosting should be avoided but are there any other suggestions, for instance lets say the car is hot and i need to go to a store, i will only be in the store for 2 minutes, before going in should i sit in the car in order to circulate the turbo (dont have a turbo timer)???? is it even necessary to let it circulate if i will be returning so soon????? basically i have no room for errors with my car so i just need some suggestions other than having a good fuel setup and constant oil changes |
Re:how to drive a boosted car
I think if you don't run the car too hard before you get to the store then you can go ahead and turn it off. I'm not 100% on this so take it with a grain of salt until some other people chime in.
If nothing else have a friend sit in the car while you go into the store, or just leave the car running and lock it...but be sure you have a spare key on you unless you like being locked out of your car. ;) |
Re:how to drive a boosted car
i dont risk it at all i dont have a turbo timer so i wait all the time before i shut it off like 5-8 MIN actualy have a method 2 tupac songs then i go on with my business ;D

Re:how to drive a boosted car
If you want to go fast youll break ----, if your going to drive your car like a ----- theirs no point in it. Your right foot should never leave the floor ;)
If you drive two mins to the store and havent boosted or done any hard rips it will be ok to shut your car off but a turbo timer is only like $100. steve |
Re:how to drive a boosted car
how long should one let the turbo timer keep the car on?
im buying one here soon and i would like to know how long...i usually let the car idle for 30 seconds and then shut it down...if its a hard ass run ill let it idle for a minute...let me know louie |
Re:how to drive a boosted car
u DON`T need any turbo timer unless you drive the ---- out of it and turb it right off.
just cruise for like a min on the way to the parking and turn that ---- right off. |
Re:how to drive a boosted car
so wait you just sit in the car while it is on in neutral idleing for 5 minutes and then shut it off?????????

Re:how to drive a boosted car
dude...you can get a decent turbo timer for like $50. i am probably going to go with the blitz one. it has a special option where it determines how long it needs to keep your car running based on engine/oil temperature i think.

Re:how to drive a boosted car
No 5th geer runs
no rev limiter bouncing no 87 octane gas AND MOST IMPORTANTLY NO SHITTY ------- MASTURBATING UNITS (fmu's) |

Re:how to drive a boosted car
i dont think there is a need for a turbo timer. if u rip on ur car befor u get ready to stop let it run, or if u race it let it run a little be for u shut it off. after i raced or ran it hard i would always let my car idle then shut it off and leave the key on so the fan could run. i was runing a fmu and hit the rev limiter more than once. not the best thing in the world i guess but my car lasted at 6-7 psi...just dont run the N1 civic type r pully, it just might cause ur oil pump gear to break one night when ur blasting down the interstate ::) ::) :'(

Re:how to drive a boosted car
What about 89 octane? What if I dont have access to anything else.

Beat it like Juan Veldez's pack mule!

Re:how to drive a boosted car
No 5th gear driving???
So when I hop on the highway for an hour or two I can't cruise in 5th gear?! |
Re:how to drive a boosted car
i still don't get tha whole no 5th gear driving ----
|
Re:how to drive a boosted car
turbo timers are retarded, sit in the car for 1 min and let the oil circulate for a second, just because you sit for 5 mins doesnt mean the oil is going to get COOL. the engine is still running. it'll just simmer down by the EXCESSIVE heat it was just at. if you know you're going to stop don't do a 2nd to the top of 4th gear pull.
|
Re:how to drive a boosted car
they mean 5th gear cause you put a lot of stress on the engine because it has to work so hard to turn the tires over in 5th. if you're going 120 and you go into 5th its fine... if you're goin 65 and you press it to the floor in 5th it might put extra stress on your engine.
but wit my torquey teg i could go from 65 to 100 in 5th gear really fast :P |
Re:how to drive a boosted car
yea it`s like if want to pass someone don`t get lazy, move ur freaking leg/hand drop it a gear to pass, then put it back to 5th..

I don't boost much in 5th gear because I am usually going 120+ mph and that's just scary in a honda, but I have a few times. Oh and bouncing off the rev limiter is my favorite sound. ;D As far as how to drive a turbo honda, just make sure you have good fuel management and your car is tuned well. Then keep your right foot to the floor at all times. Like a few others have said if your just going to the sotre and you don't drive it hard at all it's fine to turn it off, if you have been boosting then let it cool down for a few minutes, pretty simple. Oh and turbo timers are for ricers. ;) EDIT: Oh and I rape my car almost everytime I drive it. |
Re:how to drive a boosted car
How to drive a turbo honda.... If your running more than 10psi the best thing to do is HOLD ON and KEEP THE CAR ON THE ROAD, I almost hit my mom's mailbox the other night, torque steer ownz my honda.
|
Re:how to drive a boosted car
ya bro i hear that toqure steer, my ---- hit 11psi and the tires went up in smoke and car was all over the road, d16z6 t3t4 turbo :) im not a ricer and i have a turbo timer pat :P

Re:how to drive a boosted car
drive that ----------er. I get out there and move it for 4-8 hours a day.
|
Re:how to drive a boosted car
Build it right, tune it right and take good care of it, and it just won't blow.
Moderate compression, right amount of fuel, good timing, good intercooler, good radiator and oil cooler and the 5th gear top speed runs generally aren't a problem. As for the rev limiter I have a soft/hard rev limiter on my car, timing is pulled back on the soft limiter so the car stops making power, and on the hard limiter it stops squirting fuel. |

Re:how to drive a boosted car
This is confusing me.
you can still cruise in 5th, but just dont pin it in 5th? |
Re:how to drive a boosted car
It puts alot of stress onto the engine.
Cruising in 5th doesnt stress the engine, stomping on it in 5th just puts a huge load on the motor. |
Re:how to drive a boosted car
it sounds to me like driving in 5th gear is okay...generally you can cruise on the highway at less than 25% throttle. It takes very little throttle even on a stock honda to be going 80ish and maintain a steady speed. Now going from 70 to 110 in 5th gear is not sounding too healthy for a boosted honda. 5th gear in a honda sucks ass anyways.
|
Re:how to drive a boosted car
Well, in 5th gear the acceleration through the RPM range is the slowest. With low acceleration and high load on the engine, it's more prone to detonate (You rarely get detonation in first or second gear because the engine is accelerating so fast) and the other factor is that in long boost runs in fifth gear you're building up a lot of heat, thus increasing the danger of detonation even more.

Re:how to drive a boosted car
im running a base map made by leed.. have been for 5months or so on a stock standard b16a1 with t3 @ 6 with about 80000miles on it.
i race anything i can and rape the ---- out of my car.. rev limit everyday and nothings gone....yet rev limiters set at 7500 or so, but have seen it go past 8200 a couple of times.. even if i blow it, i can get another engine for cheap/. |
