hood scoop or washers?

i have this 93 accord boosted and everything just waiting on the tune. but there is one problem my intercooler isn't getting any air to it. So what i had in mind was just cuting out a piece of my hood bending it up wedling some sheet metal to the sides and bam riged hood scoop. only problem is keeping water and such out of the engine compartment.

but i also have heard from a buddy of mine that people would put washers on the hinges of the hood to let air in on the old cameros when they would race to get more air to the engine.... so im torn between 2 options what one do you think would work best and be the smartest thing to do?

Ever get the track workers at the strip come up to your window and ask if your hood is latched?

I raked my hood about 1". I unbolted the hood hinge, and installed longer bolts on both the hood side and body side, with 2 thick washers on each side.

You can see the rake in this old photo.

Re: hood scoop or washers?

i hate scoops, had one on my old ef hatch. I did actually see lower temps on coolant and even about 5-10 degrees on oil, but the way they look makes me irratated. The washers would be the way i would go, but i would probably get irratated with that too. Either way i would find some way to get more air to the intercooler.

I had a fist-sized rock SHOT at me like a damned baseball - from the side of the truck in the opposite lane. I swear there was some midget cuban hiding under it, damn thing was going faster than the truck! Luckly I was in a work vehicle - it dented a 1995 Ford truck bumper...

If you want a scoop, go for it. Its an accord, so its not like anyone notices it anyways...

does anyone have any actual evidence that raising the back of the hood lowers underhood temps? and no i dont want to hear any newbies just say it does, i want facts

I really hate the way it looks, but i had to do this to my car. Temps get hot after driving the car around for more that an hour. Hot to the point where you open the hood and touch the charge pipes or intake manifold and about get burnt. Car has not been like this since i did this to the hood, but the same day i did this i also changed my turbo manifold so it could have helped cut down on the under hood temps. Dont know :-\

Scott-EP 05-13-2007 05:40 PM

Re: hood scoop or washers?

im also not too big on the looks, but its a lot more subtile than a hood scoop. hopefully there is some real research done about it

Re: hood scoop or washers?

i've use the washer/spacer setup. 1 inch is more than enough. i can't provide the right 'information' but i can feel heat coming out from the void between the hood and body of the car.

WTF 05-14-2007 07:42 PM

Re: hood scoop or washers?

my car came with them, there was 10 washers on each bolt but i cut it down to 5 cause it looked kinda gaydm

put a wing on the hood.

Re: hood scoop or washers?

I had to space the hood of my nova up like that, we call it the redneck cowl hood. Even without inner fenders my under hood temps are outrageous.

did you notice coolant temps go down or anything?

Coolant temps, no it runs at a steady 185 no matter the weather, but the turbo exh housing sits 2" from the carb bowl the heat soaks into everything... Its not bad enough that the intake and exhaust manifolds bolt to each other lol.... talk about vapor lock

bitchasscracker 05-16-2007 07:26 AM

Re: hood scoop or washers?

so you put 5 washers on each of the 2 bolts on each side or like 5 in the rear ones and like 2 on the front ones ??

WTF 05-17-2007 04:16 AM

Re: hood scoop or washers?

my civic just had longer 10mm bolts (i think) that went into the hood from the hinge with 10 washers inbetween the hood and hinge

It cools, kinda like a cowl induction I'm guessing, but it lets air pass through easier and cools better.

So you want to put a hood scoop or raise the hood to solve this.
Show some pics of your intercooler setup. Location and what kind would really help.

It all depends on the height of the opening and speed of the car whether air comes out or goes in.
The cowl hood induction is designed to force air IN through the back of the hood due to the high pressure going over the car.

Re: hood scoop or washers?

why dont you avoid all of this and just get a front mount, for what you paid for that sidemount or whatever you are using, you could have got a used front mount on here or egay for the same price

i think i am just going to put a temp probe under my hood somewhere and test it myself

Really? Always wondered how that worked. I thought that it let air up from the grill/ground escape easier. Good post.

That is a great idea. I should do that on my notch. The underhood temps are cookin.

ill post up pics of how it turns out
