Honda's and boosting in 5th Gear
I have been told by a couple of people that D series tranny's can't take boost in 5th gear at all and will kill it.
anyone know of any truth to that? |
Re:Honda's and boosting in 5th Gear
Most engines can't take boost in 5th gear. This luggs the motor too much and overboosts the motor usually. As for the tranny, it might blow too. Especially if you are in 5th, you are going pretty fast. It is possible, but not likely for the tranny to go.

i like boosting in 5th, dont need to change gears to pass people...

Re:Honda's and boosting in 5th Gear
i think theres going to be more stress on the tranny launching or doing a burn out then there will be boosting in 5th gear.

Re:Honda's and boosting in 5th Gear
true i have never heard of anyone blowing a tranny on the freeway, its always on the launch...CRUNCH ::)

Re:Honda's and boosting in 5th Gear
5th gear is not a problem with boost but brett said, it puts more of a load on your engine than anything and lugs it. Which isnt the best thing in the world. As far as blowing the tranny, thats very unlikly, but it could happen, hard launchs 4-8k kills trannys and axles.

and broken axles suck dick
i break mine regulairly...lol acutally i've broken mine twice... both from HUGE smoke shows. |
Re:Honda's and boosting in 5th Gear
i cant see boosting in 5th hurting a trans at all...in my vr4, the only thing that i think might hurt it are my 6k all wheel drive launches....but they're so fun....i cant weight till i find a decent civic to put my ls motor into...anyone know of any cheap ass cars in the nj area?

Re:Honda's and boosting in 5th Gear
im pretty sur ethe load on the engine is the problem on boosted hondas... just have to watch egt's

Re:Honda's and boosting in 5th Gear
by 5th gear the stress is all gone. you have soooo much momentum going that your car can perform its best here. If 5th is making your motor "bog" then you need shorter gears.. "much shorter" ;D

Re:Honda's and boosting in 5th Gear
well that answers that question, thanks people :)

Re:Honda's and boosting in 5th Gear
5th gear puts more load in the engine to accelerate. the gears multiply the TQ of the engine making it easier (like pulleys) to do work. the taller the gear the more the engine itself is working = more heat

Re:Honda's and boosting in 5th Gear
I don't have a problem boosting in 5th gear. its pretty low geared with the awd wagon, plus everthing in it is larger than the normal d-series trans. I think its all more the size of the b trans. anyone got a 5th gear from an ls trans they wanna part with?

Re:Honda's and boosting in 5th Gear
thats a nice lookin wagon... how much power are you makn and how is the diferential holdin up. thats the type thats fwd till it looses traction then the rear tires work too?

Re:Honda's and boosting in 5th Gear
it allows for 3% slippage before the viscous joint locks up. I like it. still working out some small bugs though. its currently sitting in the back yard with mud all over it cause I had it in 2wd and got it stuck. just got time today to get it in 4wd and out of the mud again. ;D. no problems out of the diff yet. not sure how much power it has, running 5psi right now.
Just scored a 97 cr-v trans with a crappy second gear. i'm thinking of adapting that and a b18 into a wagon or crx with awd sometime. 8) |
