Default Homemade supercharged 4age . How long before BOOM ?

currently rebuilding a smallport 4age 16v to try out a budget set up. Currently got a walbro 255 fuel pump, toyota sc14 blower, 4agze ecu and 365cc injectors, cheap boost guage, a few belts and mounting brackets.

Now here is the part that has me worried, the motor has a 10 c/r and i am not gonna be intercoolered . Timing will be retarted at the dizzy a bit . Pump gas is the only thing available on my island. Cant afford low comp pistons or intercooler right now. (strip clubs took a bite out of my savings) . Will detonation be a problem at 6-8 psi ? Spent the better part of this week reading ---- all over the web. Getting mixed opinions . What do guys think ? I know i sound like a noob but there isnt much info about set ups like this around

you will be just fine. go a step or two colder on the plugs, and run the highest octane fuel they have on you island. if those pistons are stock then i would keep it under 10psi. if they are forged then boost the hell out of it. 10:1 is nothing to be afraid off

Saw thick head gaskets going for $185 usd on ebay. Thats cash i dont have to spend right now. Any hmt solutions to lower c/r ?

They only sell pump gas on the island. ---- i have never even seen octane booster anywhere. the pistons are stock. The abv on the blower will ensure that i dont exceed 8psi , anything more and it will vent the excess. May try to put a bigger pulley on the blower to lower boost to about 5 psi until i get the ic and forged pistons by xmas. Thanks guys keep the replies coming

I agree with you about the plugs, but my experience with supercharged 4age's is that they have VERY high IAT's from the factory, WITH an intercooler. Not to mention, the factory setup heatsoaks the ic with no more than a minute idling at a red light, and thats in moderate weather, not the temps you see yearround. Yes, you might be able to run it without an ic, but det. is your enemy and it will rear its ugly head, even with timing retarded. Too much reduction in timing will make it run hot, its an iron block, and cylinder head cooling is a concern. Running a turbo/supercharged 4a without forgings is fine, as long as detonation is kept in check. The poor factory ecu systems dont help your cause either. Forget about using an AFC or other piggyback to bump up your fuel. It wont work. Even at 8psi, you can still knock.
Not to mention, even small ports are semi-prone to blowing head gaskets. Putting a thicker head gasket will help, but it wont solve the problem.
Solution=GOOD IC + Tuning capability. Ive seen stock longblock blue tops make 250hp with good tuning. (turboed, good luck hitting that number on even the sc12) .

BTW what island do you live on?

yeah, i was just going to say that, however, it will be partly negated by the lack of quench that you'll have afterwards.

it will also through your cam timing out depending one which side the tensioner is on (ie retard or advance depending).

Im from Saint Lucia (st.lucia) its west of barbados. Mid to high 80s all year round. I will definitely run the colder plugs. Any particular brand you guys recommend ? i will be using a sc14 not the baby sc12, im not really looking to hit 250whp yet, just looking to get a lil get up and go , somewhere around 170whp will be fine for now . i agree the stock intercooler is a waste, may be if its moved some how to the front where it can get better air flow then may be it might not be half bad, i have a set of sleeve over springs that i can probably trade for one.... So in your opinion the stock small port + sc14 wont last long?

Was originally trying to go non intercooled turbo, but the price of buying a manifold online and having it shipped to me quickly added up. Was looking for a CHEAP b series mani in the classifieds that i could cut and weld the 4age flange on but found nothing in my price range ($50-$80). Really thinking about a homemade sink trap using the stock piece.
