Home made turbo system for my civic 1.3 carburated engine

Wazzup fellas, here's the deal, i have a civic D13, 1.3 75hp, its pretty weak stock, ive done some mods on it like removing midle silencers etc, ive bolted on two keihin carbs from the 1.4 dual carb engine (D14) And i have an extra exhaust manifold, a turbo from a VW Golf GTD from the 90's, some oil lines and stuff...and have some questions...

Will my carbs work well with the turbo? I was planning on getting a R5 GT Turbo carburettor that will surelly do, but if mines hang, i would keep them eh ;D

Im also going to buy a electric fuel pump and fuel pressure regulator to make the return fuel line ...

Im adapting the KKK exhaust flange to my extra exhaust header, get some fittings to the oil pan, to drain the oil, and a oil hose to fit in the oil pressure regulator place...

Can you see something here missing me? hehe ;D

Cheers

i think u need a carb made for boost i could be wrong tho

Guga 12-16-2009 04:43 PM

Wich carbs do you think will be allright with boost? I was trying to find a Renault 5 GT Turbo one but theire all a bit expensive.

tecks 12-16-2009 08:16 PM

you can get your carb pressurized or just buy on that was built for boost (pressurized) all it does is add more fuel when in boost. its an airflow operated enrichment system.

you are wrong any carb can be used for boost with only slight modifications. read the book max boost it had a chapter dedicated to draw through and blow through carbs

Guga 12-17-2009 06:15 PM

Hmm i can search that book, must be good, how do i know if my carbs are blow through etc?

Need to find out how to pressurise my carb, never knew of that pressurisation part :)

Guga 12-17-2009 06:24 PM

Found it, maximum boost, gona read it. Any other replyes would be apreciated

turbof22a 12-17-2009 11:22 PM

the blow through draw through is named for the turbo setup not the carb. a draw through setup is where the carb is infront of the turbo where the air filter goes on a efi setup and a blow thruogh is where the turbo blows air into the carb. its a really good book i think any one who wants to know more about turbos and turbo setups should read. its a little out dated but most everything said in that book is true to this day

Guga 12-18-2009 06:02 PM

Ive started reading it and have already rad a bit, so what im doing is a blow through turbo build...as far as ive understood, the presurization methood makes some of the turbos pressure or vacuum suck, or blow that thing that is in the carb's fuel "tank" that stops the fuel from comming in, so it nevers stop comming when in boost, avoiding the very common fuel failures cuz of the turbos excessive air flow right?

What do you think of me using an electric fuel pump with a FPR before the carb's fuel lines so that it is allways givving fuel instead of camshaft operated fuel pump?

Cheers

Strike 12-18-2009 09:48 PM

Hey all, my first post here. I've built a ton of blow through setups and I'd say you're on the right track.
Use the electric pump, but use the FPR on a return line instead. You'll need to boost reference the FPR and you might need to mod the fuel pump to run higher pressure. Also, some brass floats don't like too much boost and collapse under the pressure. Find a plastic float or mod the one you have.

I've personally made 1290 HP with a blow through setup, so I know it works.

Guga 12-19-2009 11:18 AM

I think mines are plastic! Can you give me a hint on how to pressurize them? like the best diy way :P hehe

Cheers for you all

Guga 12-19-2009 12:01 PM

Boost reference means that the FPR releases more pressure from the fuel pump to the carbs has boost increases right? This is done by a vacuum line from the intake manifold to the fpr or does it have to be plugged to the turbo?

This max boost book is really helping ! thanks again ppl

Strike 12-19-2009 12:59 PM

Yeah, run a line from the manifold to pressurize the FPR.

The Floats that work best on the holleys are a hard black foam plastic. Hollow brass collapses under very little boost. Never used hollow plastic, but If I had to, I'd try to fill with expanding foam of some sort. Maybe drill a small hole, partially fill and let harden with foam, fill hole with epoxy. I've never tried it, but should work well if done properly. Other than that, on the holleys, I block the power valve and jet accordingly. You might have to mod the enrichment side of things. As in block it and jet it up a few sizes. Not sure how many parts are available for that carb, so you might need to fab up some stuff to make it work, but it is all possible.

Guga 12-19-2009 02:17 PM

Id probably have to make two new butterflies, this is a 2xkeihin setup and i have no idea how much it can be bored, and if i can get butterflies etc. Couldnt i drill the jets to a bigger size if needed?

Im starting low bost like 0.5 tops with a kkk from a golf so that isnt much, try to tune it at that boost, and then a little more...

I was planning on buying a replacement electric fuel pump to the renault 19\5 etc turbo, and put a fuel pressure regulator activated by boost pressure, probably for a top of 0.9\1 bar that fuel pump would be enough right?

Id probably fill my floats with that foam, but it has to be just a bit cuz it expands like hell and it could deform the float or even blow it (like crack it) and that would be ---- lol

Would it be hard to use this carbs with the filled floats before turboing it? If not i could start doing that now.

What do you suggest to be the airbox before the carbs, because they're 2, and 2 tubes would be too much ricer LOL hehe so 1 air hose connecting to a box that is directly bolted to the carbs intakes...what do you think?

Guga 12-20-2009 05:07 PM

Hi again guys, while im waiting for the answers to the previous questions, can you tell me something, if i buy this http://lh3.ggpht.com/_Fr7CPzaYpy0/St...oil-cooler.jpg

can i use the 2 smaller ports for oil feed line and oil pressure sensor?

Guga 12-22-2009 04:49 PM

Guys some help in here plz :P

tecks 12-23-2009 12:56 AM

you could use those port as the oil feed and pressure sensor i did this exact same set up on my first turbo build with an oil cooler and all...

tecks 12-23-2009 12:58 AM

mabey you could cool the oil before it goes to the turbo and only use one port for the pressure gauge^-^

Guga 12-23-2009 03:50 PM

Hmm thats probably a good idea...but either of them would work well, because the oil cooler would cool all the oil, and the average temperature would go down, if i put it before the turbo it would send colder oil into the turbo, but then the engine would run at the same temperature cuz the turbo would heat it up again...probably, i dont know xD

Guga 12-25-2009 12:11 PM

Hi guys, took my carbs of the car and opened them, and found out one of the guillotines doesnt move, its stuck down....

Other things i found out are :

My carbs have a vacuum line going to their fuel reservoir that seems to press a small string of iron lol i cant really explain very well...neither i could understand it totally..but i hope it makes the fuel mixture richer as the vacuum pressure increases cuz it would help me with boost.

Found out my floats are hollow and i would probably need to fill them out lol...
Also found where my jets are, so if i need to drill them to a bigger size, its easyer now lol...starting to make the airbox to connect the intake tube...im using the golf GTD's one but with a much smaller size, and directly connected to both carbs...i have to make the other guillotine move, i couldnt make it move today cuz there's a fucked up bolt that i cant remove, that is keeping me from opening the top of the carburetor....

heh lots of stuff lol

Got my blow of valve of ebay now, and a fuel pressure regulator and pump...still working on the exhaust manifold, pics soon :P

Guga 12-26-2009 07:58 AM

Find out my turbo is a KKK K24 5324-988-6082

Might be a bit big but, whatever its my first project :P if it doesnt work i would just get another one heh

tecks 12-26-2009 04:44 PM

why dont you just convert to fuel injection and run a chipped obd0? its much easier than jetting and playing with carbs

Guga 12-27-2009 07:28 AM

i believe it would be easyer but i would have to get an entire d15 head or smthing, and that would probably be expensive....or could i just get the intake manifold, fuel rail etc all fuel components, and get the ECU and harness and use it in my D13 head?

tecks 12-27-2009 10:32 AM

if it was my car i would go to the junkyard find a d15b7 take the manifold with everything on it then i would take the complete wiring harness and convert my car to obd1. which isnt hard at all but then agian i like wiring. when your going forced induction its much easier to tune fuel injection especially when your doing it yourself. im pretty sure the manifold fits the head its just all the wiring you would have to do such as wiring your alternator and dizzy to work but it would be worth it. the only other thing you would need after that is to mod a fuel pump to fit your tank (Cheapest way) or get an si tank and fuel pump

Guga 12-27-2009 02:14 PM

Youve got me realy thinking about that...what about ignition map etc all the tuning after everything is assembled?

I have a D14 at home, im really thinking about building it from the bottom up and convert it to EFI, and then swap it into my car...cuz its much cheaper than swapping a B engine for now, and it would be pretty fun to do, and pretty powerfull to start playing hehe

What do you think?

tecks 12-27-2009 10:04 PM

i love d seriesi have 4 d series motors and the one currently in my car makes 412hp at 20psi. its fun to do and i love working on them converting to efi is easier than it sounds. if you convert to obd1 efi with the turbo setup all you need a chipped ecu and some tuning. if you not shooting for too much hp you can boost it stockand probably make like 150-170 which would be a pretty fun. idk about parts for a d14 but if you can find or make them why not huh?8)

Guga 12-28-2009 06:55 PM

Im starting to get a hard time finding them :(

tecks 12-29-2009 02:36 AM

internals?

Guga 12-29-2009 04:03 PM

yeah internals :l

tecks 12-30-2009 01:55 AM

nobody makes internals for any other single cam than d16s and the d15b you eathier have to custom make them or have them made(which cost big bucks)

Guga 12-30-2009 03:57 PM

Nah i can get them, im sure someone makes them, just cotta research more

Guga 01-01-2010 07:07 PM

Ive bought most of the things im going to need to turn my car to EFI and then ill start buying stuff like wideband, rom writer etc, to be able to chip my ecu after turboing it

What adaptor do i need to put in the oil pressure sensor to connect the oil feed line to it?
Cheers

tecks 01-02-2010 03:33 PM

i have mine hooked to the smaller port in my oil relocator sandwitch i went through hell looking for the fitting with the right thread. thats awesome your going to convert to efi its going to be much more easier for you

Guga 01-02-2010 08:40 PM

Thanks, just payd for the parts, but ill still be missing a fuel pump...
Will i need a fuel tank from a EFI car? Damn hope not :l

tecks 01-02-2010 10:20 PM

just make a custom fuel pump setup for you tank i saw someone make one for a dual pump system in the fab section, it shouldnt be that hard. you might have to run some hardlines and better fuelines though to handle the pressure. what exactly did you buy?

Guga 01-03-2010 10:49 AM

So i will need another fuel pump, like a walbro 255 in-line one, and a larger and braided fuel line to the tank?

I bought intake mani, loom, ecu...from a d15b
Cheers

tecks 01-03-2010 09:45 PM

damn i need a crank from a d15b :(

Guga 01-04-2010 08:34 AM

I can give you the contact to a guy in ebay that may have one

tecks 01-04-2010 08:40 AM

give me it!
