Here is how you smog your car in cali. once you get your papers about 3 months in advance start shopping around, talking to friends to find a hook up. They are that strict out here and the aem intake example is a perfect one. Trying to legalize a car with a swap, turbo or bolt ons is a huge pain in the ***. I paid 25o to get my crx done and it took 2 months to find a guy who does the illegal smog so good luck. The laws are strict has can be.

I dont see what the problem is with whats under the hood as long as the emissions check out ok. As long as its not over poluting who cares what it is. Thats a little rediculous, but then again so is smog I guess so they gotta have rules. I guess no turbo for me and I guess I'll be spending the turbo project money on a new intake and muffler. So now I can even slower with my 106hp peice of crap motor. Honda should be embarassed making such low output motors. Just kidding. They are great cars but man what a lot of work to make them fun to drive.

What is the rule on swapping then. Can I do a mini me on my d16y7 or anything else that will get some power legally. I would like to at least see 150hp or so. I want 200 with a turbo, but I guess that aint gonna happen now.

well, CA is a pain in the ***.. and as stealthmode stated, ususally the expensive aftermarket parts that have the CARB EO# are exempt, or allowed to be on your car. Technically the visual inspection is suspposed to looke up each and ever carb sticker there is on there in the big book and verify it. The main reason AEM and DC are so expensive is they actually take the time to go to the state and the EPA to get emissions testing done to their products, to make them street legal. Swaps and ect can be made legal by the state referee. They will do a comprehensive test on the motor you installed, and made sure it is up to code. IE my B18b in my EG was legalized as a 1.8 acura motor in my honda that was supposed to be 1.5 liter. But referee is a whole different ball game.

I know turbos on big desiels are exempt from smog since they recycle gasses, kinda like we are doing here. But people are asses, so we have to smog twice a year, and on change of ownership. Btw, we have roller tests now, so not just at idle does you car have to pass, but also at 25 mph.

Welcome to CA!

Canada is great, ontario is the only smog province and to get around motor swaps is easy. If the car has a non-standard motor it is considered a "hot rod" and as long as the car can pass emissions criteria based on 1980's standards you're cool.
