Default Hey guys I'm new, got a few basic questions

Hey everyone, I'm a newbie in the area of turbos so I have a few questions. I have a '95 del Sol with a d15b7 and I'd like to turbo it. How much psi could the stock internals handle? I was planning on running around 5 psi to begin with anyway. Also, is there any turbo you would specifically recommend for running low psi like I plan? Lastly, is there any FAQ or general turbo information around? I need to learn more of the basics before I start buying parts.
Thanks! Jesse

https://www.homemadeturbo.com/faq.htm

that is my old faq, it needs to be revised a bit.

You can turbo your stock motor, 5psi is a peice of cake. I would go with a smaller t3 turbo, like off a saab or 300zx. they have wastegates that are set to 5.5psi. Its tough to find wastegates that are set low.

How's the spool up on those turbos?

I just put a t3 from a 300zx in my saturn. Not sure what year it came off of but it has a .63 A/R on the exhaust side, spools up by around 3500 rpm. One thing to note on the nissan turbos, most of them(not sure what years) have a non-standard bolt pattern for the turbine to O2 housing, so you can't stick the wastegate/O2 housing from another garrett t3 on without changing the whole turbine housing.

Very true about the Nissan turbo, you would have to use the stock O2 housing.. Its not the common 5 bolt flange.

For a D-series I would go with something a bit smaller than "94sc2" you may want to go with a .48/.42 setup.

Btw, how does that saturn do with boost? got any pics?

It goes pretty good, have to tweak a few things(aka-gut cat). I plan on getting a different turbo though, probably a t3/t4 hybrid with a .48 A/R on the exhaust. If you like ghetto setups you will love how mine is right now. Since I couldnt get a new O2 housing I cut mine flush then welded my piping to it, the piping bends are also ghetto. I will get pics up as soon as I get new batteries for my digital cam.

Thanks for all the info!
A few more questions:
Can you explain what A/R means?
Would I need an intercooler or fuel management system to run 5 psi on my stock d15?
Lastly, will I lose my AC even with a small turbo? Living in Arizona, I'm not losing it.
Thanks again.

Well basically A/R describes how the exhaust gasses will push on the blades of the turbine(basically speaking, I am not going to look it up in the book right now). The higher the A/R the less restrictive it is to the exhaust gasses, but it takes more flow to spin the turbo hence you have more lag. A lower A/R like .48 is more restrictive to the exhaust gasses but it will make the turbo spool up quicker.

Maximum Boost is a good book to read for info on turbo systems. Goes over many details on choosing and setting up a turbocharger.

From what I have read in books and on the internet, an intercooler is not necissary at low boost levels. As I do not know much about imports I have no clue on the fuel management, but is safe to say you will need at least a FMU.

As far as the A/C, my particular log manifold wont let me fit my A/C compressor back in(need to make a new bracket first). Depending on the manifold you use you may or may not lose yours. Once again I don't know much about imports so I don't know the location of your A/C compressor, but from what I have read the common method involves an adaptor plate on a stock manifold. As long as your A/C compressor is not mounted low on your engine and you use the adaptor plate method I am guessing you will be fine.

To answer your question, I have a 1993 Del sol d16z6. As you do, I also live in Arizona, and yes.. ac is a must! Since u live in az.. i would definetly get fmic.. and an fmu/fpr/fuel pump would all be good to have even with stock internals.. then u will have no problem running about 6-8 psi.. just dont boost much in the summer... Not a good daily driver for summer in az.... trust me... i know first hand.. but yes u can easily leave the ac.

how hot does it get in arizona.i mean the daily temperature.........i thought for stock internals...........just need FMU/FMIC/better fuel pump will work for 7 psi........correct me if i am wrong..why does it need FPR?
