Here's some pics of how I'm gonna make my new Manifold

http://ebay0.ipixmedia.com/abc/M28/_...d40da6/i-2.JPG This guy is selling this manifold on Ebay for 200 bucks, all it is is the stock manifold with a T-3 flange welded onto it. What do you guys think about welding to cast iron? Will it be strong? When I do it, all I'm going to do is lay a big fat mig weld over it, inside and out! ;D |
Re:Here's some pics of how I'm gonna make my new Manifold
hmmm I have a stock Toyota turbo manifold in my shed...the header flange looks the samem but it will only bot on to a CT20 with a square flange and and the inside part is also square...just like the CT26 only the CT20 turbine inlet is square without the split in it

Re:Here's some pics of how I'm gonna make my new Manifold
I like the idea. I might try this too, but im not a great welding expert so I have no clue if it will hold up. Anybody wanna tell us if it will work?

Re:Here's some pics of how I'm gonna make my new Manifold
I'm doing some crazy stuff with my setup to.
I'm using my stock ZC manifold to mate with the turbo. I'll make a lot of pics ;) |
Re:Here's some pics of how I'm gonna make my new Manifold
Yeah, when I do this (hopefully this weekend, if I get my flange) I'll be out there with my Digicam for sure. Nothin' like a $20 turbo manifold!

true true

Re:Here's some pics of how I'm gonna make my new Manifold
It will hold up so long as you weld it correctly.
I have an extra manifold from a grand am that came with my engine from the junkyard. I will probably use that to fit a T3 flange :) Only thing with mine though is that I have to reroute the exhaust flow to down instead of to the side. I dont think it will be a problem though :) |

Do you have a quad-4 in that car? Those engines are weird.... No spark plug wires, anyone???? ;D

Yes its pretty weird though, Distributorless ignition and we dont have spark plug wires but we do have spark plug boots. Our Id cover has the coil packs underneath it that slide into the boots. Anyways I just put all the stock body parts on the car and put it on the road. I had to due to an unexpected accident with my truck and I'm really impressed with the 2.4 even with my auto its very peppy. |
Re:Here's some pics of how I'm gonna make my new Manifold
Nothing like some Cast Iron to Steel welding, oh ya.. ;)
looks good dude, |
Re:Here's some pics of how I'm gonna make my new Manifold
Those aren't the best welds I have seen but only time on the car will tell if it will hold up.
|
Re:Here's some pics of how I'm gonna make my new Manifold
Yeah, should hold.
The hottest part of the exhaust is in the turbine, and that's where the exhaust dumps into the downpipe. My downpipe has the cast iron flange, and I welded onto that with a mig... very strong. |
Re:Here's some pics of how I'm gonna make my new Manifold
it will hold fine....i welded cast to steel on mine, no cracks yet (a little over a month)

Re:Here's some pics of how I'm gonna make my new Manifold
haha my wifes geo's 4afe manifold is cracked between the first 2 runners and the 2nd set of runners... so that manifold looks a bit better then mine to start off w/ :)
i'm thinking the same thing w/ the rolla though, a turbo woud make it so much more fun and would be relativly simple... for that kinda manifold it should hold plenty well... idealy i belive you should use an ARC welder for cast to steel, i don't recall the rod you should use... NI maybe? after welding you are suposed to let it cool VERY slowly... i know some guys burry it in a bunch of sand... they say it's still warm 24 hrs later... if i ever go though w/ the turbo idea i'll likely do something like this so what are your plans for fuel managment? i've got a parts car comming my way soon so i could always rebuild the motor w/ GZE low compression semi forged pistions :) just wonder how the auto tranny would take that extra 6psi or so :-/ mark |
Re:Here's some pics of how I'm gonna make my new Manifold
There was a guy in Florida running 14.5's with an auto tranny, I think he had like a 94 Rolla, the auto's can take the boost fine!
Well, I had the FMU on before, but I sold it for $103 and bought a EIC SMC for $50, and I have some DSM 450's laying around somewheres..... |
Re:Here's some pics of how I'm gonna make my new Manifold
SMC =what brand? extra injector controlers are good stuff :)... what kinda boost was the FL guy runnin? was this on a 7afe?
guess i need to concentrate on getting my mr2 boosted 1st... got a GZE motor for it :) mark |
