help me build a turbo kit for my B20
when i first bought my car i knew i wanted to turbo it. to start however i worked suspension/tires to start. by the time i got to engine work i basically had given up on turboing my car because of expense. even though i knew of "junk yard"setups i didnt think it was worth it so i decided to start an all motor build. i put in a B20 motor (8.8 cr woops!) with a ITR tranny that had jdm final and a kaaz. now dont get me wrong its fun to drive but honestly i want more. i was all set to start a b20vtec setup when the thought of turbo came back into my head. im thinking a "stock" b20/vtec conversion is gonna be about the same $ as a junkyard turbo setup but im thinkin ill get alot more power with the turbo.
my big dilema is what size turbo? i was thinking 14b or t3 super 60 (which i actually had but i sold woops again!) im thinkin there about the same as far as size and the compressor map looks right on for my setup (remember only 8.8 cr so lower cfm) now i wanted to use an internal gate so considering i have a b series wtf manifold do i use with an internal gate? can i just make a plate to go over the external gate whole on say a used drag manifold? also i was plannin on doin dsm 450/afc for fueling. next would be intercooler. running <10 psi how much intercooler do i really need (again 8.8 cr) i dont need a big azz spearco with a small turbo and low boost. i was thiking 2g dsm side mount. bov 1g dsm. i/c piping is easy i can make it myself.
i know this is rambling but any thoughts? you guys are alot more open minded than honda tech since most in the FI forum there are runnin t3/big t4 or t3/60-1 it seems....

Being that you are putting together a B20 with turbo, jusst be warned that B20 stock sleeves are gaining a reputation for cracking their sleeves at moderate boost. I personally think you should be ok at under 10psi though.

I think that a 14B may be a bit small, but the "math" says that a small-ish T3 would be ideal for the 2L application. If it were me, i'd just stick to a moderate T3... not the Super-60, but not a .48 a/r either... maybe a T3 with a 45 trim compressor wheel, and a .63 a/r on the turbine... but thats just me
now i wanted to use an internal gate so considering i have a b series wtf manifold do i use with an internal gate? can i just make a plate to go over the external gate whole on say a used drag manifold?
You can do that, yes. It is likely that you'd even be able to order the manifold so that it doess not have the flange on it at all, but don't go with that option. Keep your options open so that if you want to upgrade in the future, you can without buying another manifold.
also i was plannin on doin dsm 450/afc for fueling.
Just know that you shouldn't use this past around 10psi.
next would be intercooler. running <10 psi how much intercooler do i really need (again 8.8 cr) i dont need a big azz spearco with a small turbo and low boost. i was thiking 2g dsm side mount. bov 1g dsm. i/c piping is easy i can make it myself.
Any intercooler is better than no intercooler imho. So, with that said, any of the sidemounts would work, as well as a starion. Either that, or there are some good deals to be had online with some good cores for around $300-400. But if you want a good intercooler that iss cheap, yet will work very well, pick up a starion.
There may be some differing of opinion around here, but this i just my own opinion. I'd also like to hear if someone has a different opinion about the turbo sizing... Anyway, hope that helps some!

Re:help me build a turbo kit for my B20
i understand that the b20 sleeves are suppposed to be weak on boost but with my low cr and low boost levels i think ill be fine
also yeah honda map reads up to 11 psi and the afc hack will only trim 50%
yeah as far as the turbo sizing goes a t3 super 60 just reaches 70% at 7k rpm so thats what i was basing my choice on. also you must understand that i have a usdm R tranny with jdm FD. this aint your grandmas tranny. i need something that can stay in my powerband. that being 4500-6500.
im pretty sure im gonna have to wind up buying a used revhard or drag so that i can get one with a t3 flange and just cover up the wastegate flange or who knows maybe find a cheap used tial.

That intercooler looks good... it may be a tad overkill for your ssetup, but then again, sso is mine, so who am i to talk on that? LoL
Oh, and along with keeping "in your powerband", don't forget about highway driving with a short geared box... basically it sucks *****! hehe. May want to opt for the ol' LS 5th gear swap on the tranny so that the B20 doesn't have to cruise at such a high rpm (a high rpm that it was definately not designed to cruise at).

Re:help me build a turbo kit for my B20
ive been cuising (for lack of a better word) for a while now with this tranny. since september i think....
and as far as the ls 5th its not really that bad with the R 5th. you just have to get used to it and go slow on the highway. besides you gonna buid a tranny or you gonna fu#$ around...
