Headwork for 300HP D??

I'm rebuilding my d16y8 engine this winter to put into my 97EX. I plan on using Tuner Toys rods and Vitara pistons for the block. My main question was if there was any work that would have to be done to the head to reach this number. Also will the stock sleeves hold up at this hp level? I know I'll have to retire my T3 42/48 and upgrade to a larger turbo. Maybe a T3/T4 combo. Any input would be great.

Re: Headwork for 300HP D??

The sleeves will be fine.
Leave the head stock, valve job if needed.
T3/T4 or Holset HY35 / HX35.

or a t-bird turbo. you dont need a holset to make a meer 300

Re: Headwork for 300HP D??

T-bird turbo is pushing it for 300whp. It's possible, but that's close to the limit of the snail. T3/T04b will do just fine at those levels.

The head is bare right now. It's been decked and I'm ready to install valve seals. I guess there is no way to tell if i need a valve job. :-\

All old heads can use them plus extra flow doesnt hurt

Check just to seat if you have a good seal. With valves temp. installed fill combustion chamber with kerosene and see if it holds.

I would Tend to Agree with that, but i know alot of honda people say the Honda Head's are already workedto the MAX?
Is this true? and how would you flow a N/A differnt to a F/I car or are they all one and the same?

You can do the kerosene test to check the valve seats, or the machine shop can do it for you. Just make sure the valve springs are installed.

Also the valve guides are wear items as well this test is done w/o the valve spring installed and wiggling it back and forth while it is in the open position.

I decided against the porting, If I were to do head work it would be a cam and springs.

Porting an 3 angle, or 5 angle jobs are pretty costly, but if you want your head to flow Xenocron has a guy that does it for a very reasonable cost.

I had my z6 head ported and polish (by a knowledgeable machinist), valve seats re-done, and a broken valve cover stud repaired for 220bucks

no need for port job just slap her on and turn up the boost.. 57 tirim t3.t4 for the win.. make 300 with 18 ish pis on pump and 400 on race gas call it a day

Just get some valve grinding compound, a little plunger tool, and lap the valves yourself, it will cost you like $15 or less for the plunger and valvegrind. If there's a major problem with one of the valve's or seats you will see it, and it provides a good seal.

Dude that is uber cheap. Any pics of the head. I couldnt imagine anyone doing more than a simple gasket match for that price

5 angles is a lot to fit on tiny Honda valve...something to think about.

Stock head is fine for 300, so are the sleeves. Past 400 you will probably want to look into a cam and the associated valvetrain, doing it before you hit 400 is just going to give you a nicer powerband, won't help you past any limits.

I think 50 trim t3/t4s are a great D street turbo, and I also love my HY35.

Chris,
That was what he told me. I'm going to be picking up the head in a few days. I'll get pictures of it so that I can get some reliable input. I've never had a head ported before, so OG insight would appreciated to make sure he does what he said.

Let it soak in a container of purple power over night then take the pressure washer/brush to it the next day.

I purple power tank all my motor parts overnight. Power washed look very nice. Stuff will eat up your hands wear gloves.

That is kind of true in relation to most B-series heads, but for our economic D-series heads they can use a bit of work rounding out the 90 degree bend in the exhaust ports. You can always improve flow by smoothing out the edges left by the casting process.

There was a few good write-ups on DIY head porting floating around on the internet.

Very untrue. The exhaust ports on dohc vtec heads re-act huge to work. Expect 25 whp+ . All Honda heads are hardly maxed out that is just the truth.

also the diy port work write ups are for v8 heads not the efficent Honda heads. Gains in port work from an unexperinced person just grinding expect nothing. Guy behind a flowbench etc is when power is found.

Stock B18C5 are pretty damn efficient and as you probably know dont respond as well as a D to your average bolt ons... but that doesnt mean teh head is worked to the max

Actually the write-up was for a B16A, and I should have been more specific. They aren't any where near maxed out, especially the VTEC exhaust ports , because of that conjugal routing against the coolant passages in the head but they don't require major reformation of passages like some VW and V8 heads. You won't see gains from hogging out the ports in stupid proportion. Mainly what Honda heads benefit from is forming passages that promote venturi effect in specific places, like exiting the port where the exhaust gas should be accelerated into the header where the venturi effect should be continued, or even better right into a turbine ;)

I'll have to try this when i get to working on the block. My local machine shop hot tanked the head for fifteen bucks. I let the rocker arms soak in acetone for about an hour then just wiped them clean with a rag. They came out pretty good.

After reading all the replies I think a stock rebuild is the best way to go for now, although I'm still tempted to get a cam.
