Default H2O temp sensor install

I am trying to put an autometer H2O temp sensor into my D16Z6. The two adapters that came with the gauge are too big and the sensor won't go straight in, the thread pitch is different.

I bought this brand new, fully sealed. Has anyone had this problem, and how did they get around it?

Where are you putting it? I drilled out the front water neck breather hole and tapped it to fit the sender and it works great.

I was trying to replace the stock sensor. I thought that would work, obviously not.

My factory one was not working so I bought an Electric one. Mechanical Guages use to big of probes. My old sensor came out of the side of my head and the new one threaded right in.

I have a Sunpro Water Temp Guage.

Also make sure you get the Temp Guage Sender, not a ThemoSensor for you ECU. These are tucked in some ackward places so You might not even realize they are there!

Well whatever you got from autometer depend on wether it's mechanical or electrical. My Mechanical guage(which i don't use becuase the probe is too big)has a 5/8 Bolt size thread and my electrical guage uses approx 1/8 NBPT.

There is a huge differnce in size. Electricalis easier to install because hondaand all newer engines like to use smaller holes in the motors forsensors. Mechanical guages were designed a long time ago with the dinasour motors and have not changed really.

I hadon my old car a mech. I drilled and tapped the end tank on my rad and then sealed the probe in with JB weld. The problem is the reading isn't as acurate as it is in the head of the car.

Well there are only wire connections for the gauge. So I would say that it is electrical. What does a mechanical unit look like??

i have an electrical autometer phantom water temp gauge , i thought i had the same problem as you were describing but i was trying on the wrong hole, under the distributor there is a larger plug (coolant temp sensor) refer to your helms manual, i tried using that hole and neither of the autometer fittings worked, i call my local tuner shop, and they instructed me that on this motor the actual water temp SENDER unit was located directly BEHIND ( towards the firewall) the larger unit i was attempting to remove b4 , it has a plug on the end of it with a wire coming out the back of the plug, unplug it and remove the sensor (the size of the wrench to take it out is the same size you will need to install the autometer sending unit if i recall correctly) if i recal correctly the autometer gauge comes with the actual sending unit and then 2 adapters, you will only use the actual sending unit and bolt it directly into the block. NOTE:after you unplug the stock sending unit and remove it plug it back in and zip tie it out of the way so you dont throw any cel. and the unit you need to remove is a bit hard to see especially if the distributor is on, but i definately do not recomend taking off the distributor just use a flashlight.

and the thread pitch on mine i thought was different as well but as i SLOWLY turned it, it went in fine, NOTE:i am not responsible if you break somthing, this is how i installed mine, granted the engine is pretty much exactly the same, dont hold me responsible if anything goes wrong
