Re: getting my car tuned in a week need some help
Alright, from the top:
1) post engine management questions in the engine management forum, please. Half the guys in this thread mean well but aren't experts and the other half are tards. If you post in my forum I *will* read your post and reply promptly to ensure you get quality advice.
2) Your turbo is good for 240 whp. So's your stock bottom end. Tell the tuner to max that ---- out, as long as you don't have a lot of that ignorant internal wastegate bullshit where it spools to 25 psi by 4000 rpms and then tapers to 11-13 psi aka a hair under twice the wastegate actuator's rating you'll be fine. A little bit of boost creep in the midrange also creates a more robust, highly driveable car. Just don't let it do that into the danger area, right?
3) Dmc1 is probably correct about what plugs you should run. ---- that BRK7E nonsense with the extended center electrode; the R5671A-x series of plugs is a lot better (when you can run resistorless plugs) and costs the same. There is a chance your car would be happy with a R5671A-7 (NGK stock# 4091), but 95% chance it will want the R5671A-8 (NGK stock# 4554) that Dennis mentioned. D16 like to heat up when they make power due to small bores and wimpy cam, and the spark plug is one of the first things in the combustion chamber that gets hot and creates a hot spot leading to pre-ignition. It's okay to go a little cold with the spark plugs, and then only go warmer if you have pronounced fouling problems.
4) I'd definitely tune your ride. Plenty of people get away with basemap action, but I see most turbo D16 come apart due to lack of tuning or the fact it was hammered on before it was brought in for tuning.

Yeah I almost always find 7's to be a shade to hot. You get the heat mark between the turndown of the ground strap and the base of the plug. Put a fresh 7 in and Try taking out timing and maybe adding some fuel and you can't get the heat mark to move up into the turndown and you still get little black marks in the the pocelain. going with an 8 heat range you can add some timing back get the heat mark on the turnodown of the ground strap no black specs on the porcelain, and then you may even be able to give it some timing back.
I'd really like to get some chances to try all this out on the dyno just to see what the actual numbers look like. the last car I tuned like this on the street actually started making about 1.5 psi more boost after tuning timing by the plugs. I really wonder what I was thinking back when I didn't check plugs nonstop.
