Finally finished up my setup!! Tuning to come soon!

6 Attachment(s)
I just got done with this bitch this last week. It's running really good currently but I set up an appointment to dyno tune it next Saturday. Right now I am running on my old Uberdata map, which was tuned for my old setup (really similar). Anyways, it's nothing special, but here it is.

A little rundown on the setup.

- 90 Civic STD chassis
- d16z6 engine, rebuilt from the ground up with stock internals
- ARP headstuds
- OBD 1 conversion, chipped p28 ECU currently running Uberdata, will tune with Crome next weekend
- SFP mini-ram manifold, heat wrapped and silicone coated
- knock-off 38mm wastegate w/ 9 psi spring
- T3 .42/.48 turbo with a 50 trim comp wheel, completely rebuilt
- eBay intercooler
- 2nd gen DSM BOV
- custom piping made by myself using piping and flanges from Racing Solutions
- DSM 450cc injectors
- etc.

That's about it. Just your basic T3 turbo setup. It runs really well and as far as I can tell is going to be a great setup for me. I really like this turbo too, the spool characteristics are exactly what I wanted. My last setup had a T3 .48/.60 on it and was great for top end, but this T3 spools way sooner and has a really great mid range. It's going to be a lot of fun on the autocross course!!

Anyways, here are some pics. Any feedback is welcomed. Oh, and I know I should have used T-bolt clamps, but I got these for cheap and I made sure to tack weld the ends of all the piping so the couplers have something to grab on to.

I like that glass, but there should be Guinness in there instead of water ;)

Very nice looking setup, just throw a larger wire loom over all the gauge wiring and it will be super clean.

I prefer Tanqueray for my gin :y, but gin and tonic period is good in my book.

Really clean setup. Nice job on the radiator fill idea.

Paint on the charge pipes looks good too.

Looks like a nice setup, should be real fun on the autox course. Just wondering what tires do you usually run?

This year I will be running Kumho V710s, hopefully mounted on 13" Lenso VPDs. :6

Certainly doesn't suck!

Is that a Moroso filler neck? I have a friend who couldn't fit a 92-95 radiator in his ED and pulled an MG Midget unit out of left field that doesn't have a filler neck.

Yup, it's just a regular Moroso filler neck. I was a bit concerned at first about how well the Neon radiator is going to cool the car, but so far I haven't had any problems. Of course, it's not very hot out either. We will have to see if that little radiator will be able to keep this thing cool during the summer.

It has about the same area as a 92-95 Civic radiator, so I'm not too concerned, plus I bought a really high powered Flex-a-lite slim fan that supposedly can move a lot of air.

Anyways, we will see.

Sweet setup, only thing i see is your upper charge pipe looks like its hitting the Positive battery terminal, it will rub threw that rubber if its touching it :X.

Re: Finally finished up my setup!! Tuning to come soon!

The freakin oil return is leaking right between the flange and the turbo, for some reason it's leaking pretty badly. I suppose I will have to get back under the car this weekend and put some sealant on it.

What filler neck are you using? I bought the one sumit sells and i cant find a cap that fits it right :3. All the ones ive bought leak. Ive used the 16, 18, and 20 pound caps they all still leak ???

It's just a Moroso filler neck with a vented 16lb cap. I dunno, I've never had any problems with it. *shrug*

Good job!!
This small T3 50 is really gonna scream !
I should have insisted more on the watercooling option!!

Re: Finally finished up my setup!! Tuning to come soon!

I'm having some sort of problem with my DSM bov. It keeps venting out all the boost at like 10psi. Then it gets stuck or something because it won't build boost, then it will, then it won't etc.

Is there any way to clean the bov? I think the plunger is sticking or some ----.

Tom-Guy 02-01-2007 09:54 PM

Re: Finally finished up my setup!! Tuning to come soon!

Clean it out with a lot of WD40 or PB Blaster or the like. Keep flexing it open and closed, if you do this on a vise be gentle. It's opening a certain amount and getting stuck on dirt or corrosion, so you have to work that free.

WD40/PB Blaster is kerosene based, so it will evaporate. I'd set the BOV somewhere warm and dry overnight to get let most of the kerosene dry (back on the car if you can keep it in a garage) and spray it with white lithium to lubricate it's travel.

Happens to RFLs and cheap eGay BOVs every so often, especially the bumper mounted ones that get wet a lot.

looks like a solid setup, almost identical to my last one beside the fact that i was no-tec 8)

did you cut out the entire bottom of your bumper than put the lip on? You have a bumper support on there? Any better/more pics of the bumper??

Looks well built. Only thing is the "HMT" front mount. I would just spray that all flatblack.

Yeah, good chance of getting killed by a minority for being a racist, with how HMT is these days. :3

Re: Finally finished up my setup!! Tuning to come soon!

The problem I'm having isn't the bov. I took it off today and made a block-off plate so I could see if it would build boost without the bov. Went for a drive with the block off plate installed and at 5 psi I heard the same sound I was hearing before and the boost dropped to zero while I was still at WOT.

So I don't know what the hell is going on. I try to boost and it goes up to 5 or so then drops to zero and it's smoking like mad. I did a comp test and it's good, so I can't figure out what the problem is.

I also tested my pipes for leaks and there aren't any. I'm really clueless.

Any ideas? Why would I be losing all of my boost all of a sudden like that?

Turbo junk?

I've read this thread like 3 times so I might as well post, I like the setup, looks very nice.

Re: Finally finished up my setup!! Tuning to come soon!

maybe your wastegate is messed up

Tom-Guy 02-03-2007 11:05 PM

Re: Finally finished up my setup!! Tuning to come soon!

I vote wastegate. Bad couplers limit boost and make funky noises, not cause it to fall off.

BLAAST 02-04-2007 09:03 AM

Re: Finally finished up my setup!! Tuning to come soon!

This wastegate looks like the 35mm copy. I had much worse experiences with those than the 38mm copies.
To test it, you can blow in the side nipple. If air goes through, the diaphragm is blown and you need the wastegate replaced.

koreanwilcox 02-04-2007 11:18 AM

Re: Finally finished up my setup!! Tuning to come soon!

I tested the wastegate, blow off valve, and I tested all the pipes for leaks. There were none.

I took it to a local shop and they are 100% sure that the turbo is toast. I also had a friend of mine who is a Lexus tech check it out as well, both are convinced it's the turbo. Under load one (or both) of the wheels are contacting the housing and slowing it enough to make me lose all the boost.

I'm pulling the turbo off this morning and sending it back to Blaast, it's still under warranty so it shouldn't be a problem.

I'm really not excited about pulling everything back off though and having to send the turbo back in after only like 30 miles. But I don't really have any other choice I suppose. :'(

BLAAST 02-04-2007 11:50 AM

Re: Finally finished up my setup!! Tuning to come soon!

no it's not a problem. Can't wait to see what actually went wrong in this turbo :S
Actually, you won'T have to wait: a new CHRA will be shipped to you on Monday. Just return the bad one at your earliest convenience.

koreanwilcox 02-04-2007 01:58 PM

Re: Finally finished up my setup!! Tuning to come soon!

I pulled the turbo off and it turns out that there's a big chip out of one of the turbine blades! :S

So yeah, definately not blaast performance's fault, just shitty luck I guess.

I'm glad I figured out what it was though. lol.

With a chipped turbine blade it would get out of balance at high rpms which would cause wheel to housing contact etc. etc.

Anyways, blaast performance has been really helpful through this whole thing! :)

Re: Finally finished up my setup!! Tuning to come soon!

I hope it gets back together soon. Once I get my built z6 in tomorrow, I want to do another real cheap HMT kit with that turbo. I want to see how much fuel it uses at 16-17psi vs my s-trim at 10psi, as I never dyno'd the s-trim kit.

Assuming you're going to autox, the only other thing I'd suggest is possibly smoothing out the oil pump's outlet in the future. THe new oem pumps have a much larger tube at the end (for an NPT plug), which allows for full-port blending, rather than matching a 12mm pump oriface to a 17mm gallery. I'd also suggest baffeling the oil pan if you can, obviously with care to the design. It can be fucked up just like porting a head can be.

Nice setup though. :6
