Filter - Screen - Open Intake What Are you Running? Whats The Best?

Just going to start building all the piping for my crx when the flanges and couplers get here, was deciding on whether or not to make an intake pipe or not. The car is daily driven, zero fenderliner or underbody liner.

Just wonderring what everyone is running, what works the best, what sounds the best.... etc etc

I really dont think i wanna run an intake so Im preally just inbetween squeezing a piece of panty hose/mesh screen behind a custom flange or just running it open. Would the panty hose decrease flow a lot? Curious

I just put the filter right on the inlet.

Works fine for me. Lots of people do each of the options.

I think it depends on conditions where you live.My area there is lots of gravel, dust sand on the roads quite often so I would never run without a proper filter.I had to make a intake pipe on my 90 hatch as the filter would hit the frame rail so i moved the filter to a open area.

i run a cheap ass APC filter on my car...works fine...

i had a bad expriance with the panty hose on my car....it sucked it in...---- was a bitch to clean out of the intercooler... :-\

i run a piece of screen hose clamped to the turbine inlet.. i have no fender well liner and have driven in the pouring rain before, as long as the turbo doesnt go under water, you be strizzy O0

I'd at least run a screen mesh but me personally I'd rather not take any chances

Ive read that both a screen and a filter greatly hinder flow, true?

Which sounds best as fas the turbo spooling goes?

using the screen is next to nothing. if you really want that spooling sound then go that way. but think about how fast that turbo spins like 18,000 rpms. at that speed any small piece of sand or dirt could cause damage. but its up to you if you dont care cuz its an old turbo then knock yourself out

The surface area of a screen is very low, and it is a huge flow restriction. The only thing it filters out are large rocks that would own the compressor wheel instantly.
The turbo spins at over 100,000rpm so you're damn right, any particles big enough to see with bare eyes will eat the compressor wheel over time.

sorry youre right about 100,000 rpms. some even up to 150,000 rpms

I've done both and personally don't see any differences. I ran mesh but the I got a decent K&N for free, so I went that route. Don't change the spool sound, butone way to combat that is to get a bigger turbo!!!!

Re: Filter - Screen - Open Intake What Are you Running? Whats The Best?

I have no room for a filter... I stepped on an old APC cone filter POS to flatten it to fit, but it ended up falling apart after a couple of weeks. :3

I tore it apart, cut out circles from the screen/felt and clamped them on my inlet flange. I had a 2-ply screen with felt in between for daily driving and a single screen for the track. It took me a few days to realize that the 2-ply severely inhibited air flow. It was probably safer that just a screen, but I lost about 3 lbs of boost. I ran the single ply screen for the rest of the year with no problems... it's not my daily driver though, didn't drive in the rain, etc... After just a few weeks though, the 2-ply did get really ------- dirty. I was amazed at how much crap gets sucked in. :X

Having tried a few different options, if I could, I would run a cone filter... Functionality/safety trumps cool sounds.

i have no flow restriction and no filtering either. :D

In my stupid CRX with the EG rad and stock CRX fan shroud, I have 0 room for anything. The fan shroud rubs on the intlet of the turbo for a nice visual. I was running 7lbs and the filter lasted for about 3 days. Then I did a top end run, and sucked in my filter screen (stuff used on screed doors) and like that other dude said, cleaning it out of the throttle body and the intercooler is a pain in the butt!!! Im not qutie sure what Im going to do... What I do know is boost ownz me!

If the screen is being sucked in, that is visual evidence of how much of a restriction it is.

Sounds like filter is the way to go, I think Im going to make an intake pipie for it as well bringing it up quite a bit more, sits to low for me

yup filter is the way to go, i'd use one but theres just NO ROOM not even for an intake tube to relocate the filter. I have double mesh screens (food strainer) and double panty hose with K&N oil. It gets dirty very fast, like within 2 months its pretty clogged and i loose a few psi boost. Now i cleaned it and i'm not going to use the oil we'll see how that works. O0

ya gotta think about your exhaust as well. this will affect the flowrate just as much as the intake on the turbo. they go together hand in hand. so if you have a shitty flowrate on your exhaust, maybe a lousy flowing header, it probobly whouldnt make that much of a differance to swich from a filter to a screen.

Yes but adjusting the flow of your exhaust takes time and $$. Changing the filtration is so much simpler.

anything takes time and money. is it goinna make that much of a differance what you have on your intake if youre blowing through a straw? the turbo makes a differance too. what if its a t25, what differance is that gonna make on a little turbo. just as i said, intake and exhaust go hand in hand. im not saying its free, or cheap.

Keep in mind that the guys who run screens typically live in California or Arizona or some ----. :8
