a few questions!?!?

hey, i am new to this board, and new to boosting hondas.. here are my specs before i get to the questions.. I have a 89 crx with a b16 swap, garrett t3 turbo (saab) using only the oil cooling, saab blackstone smic, PVC charge pipe(poopy i know) stock 1g dsm bov, timing retarded 6 degrees and an safc. questions start with: 1. if i boost more than 2 pounds, my car runs like total ---- unless i turn it off and back on again??!? any suggestions? 2. i was sitting at a car wash with my car idleing, and it started smoking.. i popped the hood and there was oil splattered on the block (coming from turbo for sure now) do i need to rebuild it? or any suggestions?? on to the 3rd question: what is the best safc settings to use? mine right now are at idle +5 and above go from 3000 = +15 all the way to 7k @ +26. any help would be greatly appreciated. -Daniel

Oh ---- man, are you boosting using an AFC with stock injectors?? :o STOP right where you're at!! No more boost for you. You'll be lucky if you didn't fry your pistons by now.

You need larger injectors. Holy ----.

If you aren't running a missing link you are throwing a CEL and in limp mode. That's why you have to turn it off and back on again. Your timing is way too far retarded.

Re:a few questions!?!?

im glad you said that about the injectors.. i have 1g dsm 450s in my garage right now.. car is parked so ill put them in tomorrow... what is a good degree of timing?? and its -6 degrees from stock..ive also seen post where people bitch about the missing link.. so i didnt know about using one. thanks

Dr.Boost 04-04-2004 11:10 PM

Re:a few questions!?!?

Well, you don't use the missing link if you are using 450cc injectors with the AFC. You had the opposite effect going which would result in the MAP letting the ECU see positive pressure, which would trigger a CEL.

Advance your timing about 4 degrees so it will be only 2 degrees retarded.

When you get the injectors in, set the AFC to negative 35 across the entire range. I suggest you take it somewhere to get it tuned.

wideband O2 sensor...probably the principle reason you should have someone else tune your car or at least use their ----

Re:a few questions!?!?

The wideband oxygen sensor gives you an accurate estimate of how rich/lean you're running in your mixture. Vital information to run an engine properly.

i should have someone else ---- up my car because i didnt know one term?? hmm. but no, i am not using a wideband system (WB) didnt think a homemade turbo setup and 6 psi needed too much money.

i didnt say that you not knowing the term was the reason, calm down. not having the WB is the reason ;)

Re:a few questions!?!?

as far as the leaking oil, i would make sure it wasn't leaking from the oil feed or return before i went rebuilding the turbo. generally, i would just 'blow' all of a sudden, they usually wear down over time, but it's not usually one minute your turbo is good, then it's bad. check all your connections, clamps, etc. first, throw some thread tape on them, then try again. as far as having some one else tune your car, we're not talking about an import shop/rice shop etc., we're talking about at the dyno, where they use wb's to tune it and are professionals and that is what they do, they wouldn't ---- your car up, besides, you would be right there, you don't drop your car off a the dyno and say "i'll be back in an hour, have her running right", you're right there involved when your car gets dyno tuned.

the only dyno around here is 50 bucks for one run not including tuning... my return is not leaking and i dont think my feed line is leaking.. but ill check to make sure. thanks

Re:a few questions!?!?

well, nobody said that tuning was cheap. just get your own wb kit and you can tune just as well, they are a little pricey though, they have cheaper ones that you have to assemble (lots of soldering) your self, just check out the engine management section. btw, are you obd0 or obd1? you may want to check out turbo edit or uberdata for tuning purposes, you'll get a lot more bang for your buck.

This is a good example of somebody not doing their homework before boosting their car. :o
