A few pics of my DIY Turbo Modular Motor Foxbody Mustang

Here is a few pics of my recent project. Its a 1988 Mustang LX (former 4cyl car) The engine is a 4.6 SOHC 2valve with 2002 Ported and Polished P.I. Heads, Intake, Cams. Modular Engine K-member and Front Suspension. Automatic Tranny(for right now have 5spd also waiting to see which i like better) Iam using a Holset HE-351CW Turbocharger, Custom Made Modified Factory Exhaust Manifolds. Iam gonna be using a MegaSquirt V2.0 (with every avaliable option)to control Fuel and Spark. This project started out naturally aspriated but i received an almost brand new Holset HE-351CW and made the manifolds and then i had no reason not to try it, the best part about the whole project is i have a total of about $550.00 invested in the whole project (Car,Engine,Transmission,Turbo, and Piping) Ive been collecting parts for the last couple years to build a car and this is what i have so far. Now i need to buy BOV, Wastegate, Megasquirt Stand-Alone ECU and i should be pretty close to firing it up and getting started tuning it should be a fun car no reason it wont Turbo'd V-8 in a light car with good suspension etc.and its a great way to learn about turbocharging and etc. Anyway here are some pics of my progress so far.

Re: A few pics of my DIY Turbo Modular Motor Foxbody Mustang
The car and the turbo setup looks good. One good thing about your project is, you only need a small amount of boost (5-7psi) and you have a monster. You might also have to upgrade your transmission.
Good luck. |
Re: A few pics of my DIY Turbo Modular Motor Foxbody Mustang
You can upgrade to a 99 lightning MAF and then modify the stock ECU. No need for mega squirt.
|
Re: A few pics of my DIY Turbo Modular Motor Foxbody Mustang
yeah i was gonna go the 90mm MAF and 42lb injectors but i want to go with a megasquirt b/c it will give me more control of the tune and datalogging cababilities.

Re: A few pics of my DIY Turbo Modular Motor Foxbody Mustang
Yeah this thing should be very fast. I hear those mod motors are good to way over the power levels the 5.0 guys were getting without splitting the block. Budget boost mustangs seem to perform very well for the money. Cant wait to see it running!

ANY ONE GOT ANY ADVICE ON WASTEGATE AND BOV?
Hey does anyone have any input on which brand and sizing would be best for my application i want room to grow with whatever BOV and Wastegate i purchase. How many mm wastegate should i purchase and what brands are the best and what brands should i stay away from. Ive been leaning toward Tial if i could find them for the right price
|
Re: A few pics of my DIY Turbo Modular Motor Foxbody Mustang
Awesome project :o That is gonna be a monster. What all is involved in swapping in a Mod motor into the foxbody chassis? For wastegate and blow off valve i would go with Tial 50mm blow off valve for sure and maybe go for a bigger gate like the 44mm or 46mm as it should be able to control it down the road as well when you go to bigger turbo etc.Keep the updates coming i cant wait to see how this comes out.

As far as ECU goes iam getting a MegaSquirt instead of messing with the OBD2 computer with PATS (passive anti-theft sysytem) which requires getting new keys programed before the car will start. So you suggest 50mm blow off valve and 46mm wastegate? What power levels and boost levels are those good to? thanks for the advice and complements |

Re: A few pics of my DIY Turbo Modular Motor Foxbody Mustang
Nice work on the dyeing it came out great. As far as HP rating it depends on turbo sizing, boost levels etc but those sizes should work well for you i would think.

You can also check out the HKS GT wastegates. It has a 60mm diameter valve and can handle 600 to 1000 HP. The new HKS GT 11 wastegate comes with either a 50mm or 60mm stainless steel valve. Spring ranges from 8.5psi, 11.6psi, 29.0psi and 29.9psi.

Re: A few pics of my DIY Turbo Modular Motor Foxbody Mustang
Wow that looks cool. I have a HMTT setup on my 89 notch on a 5.0. My other stang is a 97. The notch started out as a 4 and I swapped the 5.0 in there but I always think hmmm I wonder how a mod motor would be in there....You will get some nice power out of that combo for sure. I heard the 4.6 is actually lighter than the 5.0 (although it is bigger), does that seem true? Your setup makes me wish I had gone for the 4.6.

Re: A few pics of my DIY Turbo Modular Motor Foxbody Mustang
Ebay has 50mm HKS knockoffs that people have had success with.
I'll be curious to see how that 9cm hotside does on a motor that big. I know I found those specs and such... I'm trying to get one of the HEs for myself to try out... probably on a 1.6L single slam honda motor ;P Keep us updated :) |

Re: A few pics of my DIY Turbo Modular Motor Foxbody Mustang
does megasquirt have launch control? If it does, you'll be able to use that to build boost off the line and get a manly mans manual trans. ---- automatics!

Re: A few pics of my DIY Turbo Modular Motor Foxbody Mustang
i totally agree that they put the power to the ground better and all, but driving a manual trans is where the fun is at. That, to me at least, is why we put all of our money into our cars. My personal opinion, dont take it too seriously. I never owned an auto so i guess i dont even know...

Just uploaded some pics of my hotside (exhaust) setup i was really limited with what i could do b/c the turbo iam using has a 4" outlet so i got a full 4" exhaust system from my friends diesel truck that he took off to upgrade to 6" it had some nice mandrel bends in it so i cut it up and this is what i came up with should be nice and quiet. The welds are rough i know but once they are ground down and I reweld them with my new argon mig that i just got back they should be ALOT better looking. and about 95%sure iam gonna just get all the piping redone once i get EVERYTHING mocked up so dont hate on the shitty welds.
Attachment 33996 Attachment 33997 Attachment 33998 Attachment 33999 Attachment 34000 Fender fits perfect probably gonna cut out a hole in the bottom of the fender for the pipe Attachment 34001 Attachment 34002 I took off the whole front clip so i can start making my intake piping and intercooler piping and mount my intercooler(which i should have in the next day or so). I removed a few things i dont need on this car(bumper supports etc.) and i have ALOT of room to mount my front mount and my piping should go pretty smoothly hopefullly. Attachment 34003 Attachment 34004 Attachment 34005 Attachment 34006 Attachment 34007 Attachment 34008 I think next iam gonna start welding and filling all the holes in the inner fenderwells and engine bay i cant stand all the hole looks like **** iam gonna make it completely smooth even the firewall and my standalone only runs like 12wires to the motor so should be a very clean engine compartment. probably paint the engine bay once the smoothing is done. iam going for this look dont know how close ill get it but this is what iam shooting for iam pretty good with body work and shaving door handles etc so i should be able to do a pretty good job. Re: A few pics of my DIY Turbo Modular Motor Foxbody Mustang
WOW :o. All you have to do now is cover the exhaust with some insulating wrap.
|
Re: A few pics of my DIY Turbo Modular Motor Foxbody Mustang
You might want to consider a presilencer. THere is room for one right over the top of the tire. It'll cut down on noise and heat.

Nice job so far, btw. Congrats. I'd go for built C4 or one of the TH350 conversions, which a lot of the SBF guys are leaning towards locally. I dunno much about fangling one of those to a mod motor, but that option probably exists. |
Re: A few pics of my DIY Turbo Modular Motor Foxbody Mustang
Why not just dump the exhaust right infront of the front tire? So much easier and you dont have to cut body panels
