do you have to use an air filter on a turbo?
I've seen it done before, but not sure if its safe for my engine. I wanted to make a ram air coming from my front bumper to my turbo without an airfilter, fresher colder air is better,but what if I suck up rain or dirt? Or would I be better to make a ram air to my bumper, but try and put it in a place I can put an airfilter on it?
uh, i would highly suggest using a filter if it's a daily driver, if it is a trailor queen/track -----. no you don't need a filter.
as you mentioned though, you don't want to suck up rain / dirt / mud / whatever it must be a daily driver, use a filter or you will likely ---- something up (impeller or engine..)

yes it is a daily driver, so I'll be using a filter I guess. Do you think it would be better to just put a filter on connecting it right up to the inlet, or make a mandrel bend tubing down to my front bumper and get colder air?
It dont matter if you put the filter in a different spot. the turbo is So hot its really hardly going to make a difference. If you want colder air get a bigger intercooler. Or NX NTercooler spray! Oh yea Keep a filter on it. one pebble in that turbo and your fucked!
If you can...Put the filter where it can get cooler air. This will help lower overall system charge temps.
Less heat going into the system from the beginning will make it easier for the cooling componets to do their job.
Also, make sure that the filter you choose is large enough to flow enough air. If not, the compressor will lose effeciency and produce more heat.

Its forced induction.A filter will should not make a difference in performance unless your using a cheap fram filter.The turbo is going to suck air no matter what.Put a filter on it and save your turbo.
what they said about the filter... and get it from a "cold" location... the IC is there to lower temps... but if it has to start out w/ lower intake themps it has to cool less... yes the turbo will still heat up the air as will compressing the air... thats the nature of the turbo and forced induction... but starting w/ a cooler "starting point" will help
