A different HMT install
Well, the other day I decided to skip class and turbo my buddies Mk II Golf. It took a hell of a lot longer than I orginally planned....22 HOURS STRAIGHT!!!! So, I ended up skipping two days worth of school.
Here is a picture of the engine bay before the install. We had already upgraded a few things, 210-320cc injectors from a G60, GTi exhaust header + downpipe, 2 1/8" exhaust with no cat, BMW MAF, and a new chip for his ecu. http://www.hamco.ca/Extra/1.jpg Here is the original base manifold (bottom) we took off earlier and the MX-6 manifold (top). http://www.hamco.ca/Extra/2.jpg A pic of the BMW MAF, I guess it would have been smarter to take a pic of the stock one with the BMW one so that you could see the different in size. The BMW MAF is 50% larger and plugs right in. http://www.hamco.ca/Extra/3.jpg Here is the IHI turbo, bought it off chris aka spoon fed. http://www.hamco.ca/Extra/4.jpg The HMT style manifold. ;D This part took far long to make fit. If one thing didn't get in the way it was another. I hope the cast holds, I tried to get decent penetration in the cast, but we all know cast shouldn't be welded. :-\ http://www.hamco.ca/Extra/5.jpg The turbo mounted on the engine, finally. You can see how close the intake is to the rear mount. The red silicone was used to re-seal the housing after I took it apart to clean it. There was no gasket, and there already was silicone on it so I figured it really didn't matter. The exhaust was really close to the shift linkage assembly, you can't see it all that well but that was a bitch as well. http://www.hamco.ca/Extra/6.jpg http://www.hamco.ca/Extra/7.jpg Intake manifold installed, I'm not a fan of non-cross flow heads, but the turbo fit so what do I care. The intake was also installed. GO K&N!!! http://www.hamco.ca/Extra/8.jpg The oil return was pretty simple, here is a pic of the pan with the steel pipe I used. (known to some as gas pipe) http://www.hamco.ca/Extra/9.jpg What an abortion of a downpipe this was, it was extremely tight with the steering rack in the way of the O2 housing. I was getting tired and we both wanted this to project to get completed soon. http://www.hamco.ca/Extra/10.jpg This was the solution for getting the compressed air into the engine. The main problem was the odd throttle body casing that VW uses. It is two flappers one small and one large so the casting is an odd egg shape. We ended up using the stock rubber intake pipe. http://www.hamco.ca/Extra/11.jpg Here is it in all its glory. A turbo DigiFant II. You can see the brass fitting for the oil feed on the right of the head. The blowoff/recirc valve is ontop of the oil fill, it was punked from an early 90's mark 3 supra. http://www.hamco.ca/Extra/12.jpg All in all it wasn't that bad of a project. For management the digifant can see the equivalent of ~6-8 psi which is in the ballpark of what we are running. Overall costs where dirt cheap. Turbo, and mani - 50 O2 housing, and downpipe - 35 oil lines and misc fittings - 60 BMW MAF - 35 Injectors - 80 ECU upgrade - 40 total - ~295 canadian I figure that this pretty damn HMT style. The car drives well, the torque increased drastically and the powerband is extremely smooth now. Because of the shitty manifold design and the restrictive downpipe the top end isn't that grand but still much better than before. Bottom line is he is pretty happy with it, and it didn;t blow up so that is good for now. ;D |
Re:A different HMT install
Very cool. It's good to see something different someone's been working on. Those things are deffinately torque hogs, or at least the newer ones are.

Re:A different HMT install
much props for staying HMT style

Re:A different HMT install
i was gonna turbo my sprint, but its carb/fi, so i think ill just leave that alone. but i found a swift gt block, so i think ill have some fun.

Re:A different HMT install
i bet that thing boost's quick as hell, small turbo with very lil charge pipe

Re:A different HMT install
Wow, you guys get on posts quick as hell.
yeah, the boost comes in before 2k which surprised the hell out of me. |
