Difference between Ball bearing turbos and ceramic *vid*

Well since some people have never seen a comparision between a ball bearing turbo and and regular ceramic turbo I thought I would make a vid so here you go

It's just my crappy comp...tryed it on my laptop and it worked fine, nice comparison vid though. Suprising how freely the ball bearing spins.

works fine. nice vid.
are you going to take them apart and show the bearings?

Good I'm glad it works. No, I'm not going to take them apart, I just wanted to show how much easier a ball bearing turbo spins compared to a ceramic so people can see for themselves why a ball bearing might be worth the extra money.

The other one's a turbonetics that I just cleaned, it has 600 miles on it. I can compare to other turbos if you think its an unfair comparison

It looks like the ceramic turbine is eating the housing!

yea whitey, I know for sure as hell that my non ball bearing turbo spins better then the one you got there, something is fucked. ???

cool video. don't ballbearing turbos wear out faster than bushing turbos?

Jesus ------- christ well I guess everyone thinks I'm working for Garrett and out to sell ball bearing turbos. Here's a comparison between 5 turbos (all which are in very good condition) Here's the other video with a comparision of a Mistubishi 12A turbo to an IHI RHB5 to an IHI RHB52 to a turbonetics T3/T4 to a ball bearing Garrett T3/T4

http://www.draglab.com/hmt/Whitey/Picture.mpg

The turbonetics T3/T4 is practially brand new. The reason it makes a sound in the first video is cause I just cleaned and reassembled it and it has a little bit of dirt on the turbine wheel. So if you think its shot than you have no idea what your talking about.

Re:Difference between Ball bearing turbos and ceramic *vid*

Easy now killer... I get your comparison. The first video confused me because I thought that crunching noise was something screwed up inside. but if most ceramic turbo's spin like that compared to a b.b turbo I'd much rather use the b.b. Maybe if this T3/T4 shits the bed i'll look into it. That dirt in there isn't going to ---- anything up prematurely is it?

Re:Difference between Ball bearing turbos and ceramic *vid*

is that that manifold for your twin turbo setup i see sitting behind that third turbo? cool video man. i have a new t3/t4 turbo from turbonetics with the same miles and it spins about the same. wish i got a ball bearing one

EFHatch 11-25-2004 09:44 AM

Re:Difference between Ball bearing turbos and ceramic *vid*

a friend just got a ball-bearing turbo installed, that thing spins forever once you turn off the engine...

I wouldn't have compared the BB to a fucked up turbo, that wouldn't really help anyone out. The noise is just a little bit of dirt (most likely rust off the turbine housing) becuase I just got done reassembling it 5 minutes before the video. And no its not going to hurt anything cause it'll all blow out of there in 5 seconds. It only made noise cause I'm spinning the wheel with my fingers pushing the wheels closer to the housing.

Nice vids man I always suspected they'd be like that but never had any visual evidence. When you turn off your car with a ball bearing turbo can you still hear it spooling down? Cuz that would be tits

MyVtec8yourV8 11-25-2004 01:35 PM

Re:Difference between Ball bearing turbos and ceramic *vid*

hmmm thats weird i have a turbonetics t3/t4 that has about 2000 miles on it and it spins free.. not as free as the BB turbo.... but lots better than the other one.

Great vid though man...
It it possible to take a air hose and blot in the inlet for like 2 seconds and then see how long each takes to slow down? that way there is no noise from your fingers or from you moving the fins at all..
Just a though.. good job though..

Reddy 11-25-2004 02:05 PM

Re:Difference between Ball bearing turbos and ceramic *vid*

The ceramic turbo has been off a car for a while so yeah it will eventually spin freeer when hot oil goes through it but nothing like the ball bearing.

Here's the final video on this subject, sorry its shakey but last night was a big drinking night. Also ball bearings sound ------- badass too

For it to make noise you would have to hit full boost than jam on the brakes and shut off the car

I'm doing it. Best idea ever!

there is something wrong with the none ball bearing turbo, i did the same thing with the air hose and my friend's TEO4 turbo and it spun for lot longer then that none BB turbo

or put oil in the center section and use a air compressor :p

whitey, i'm assuming that the ball bearing turbo is a t3/t4 hybrid correct? if so where did you purchase it or do you want to sell that one? pm me

Re:Difference between Ball bearing turbos and ceramic *vid*

A dry bearing section on the viscous turbo would spool shittily compared to the same turbo hooked up to a running engine.

Alright fine here's the video. Both turbos have low mileage so if people bitch again about the turbo being fucked I'm taking it down

Re:Difference between Ball bearing turbos and ceramic *vid*

damn, i had no idea bb turbo's spun that freely. you really should fill the cartridge with oil and plug it off and see if that makes a difference, i'm sure it would. i never had a filter on my turbo, so i could reach down and spin the comp. wheel and i will attest that it spun easier when it was on the car with oil in it then when it was off the car with no oil in the center cartridge
