detonation and no boost
 

i put my turbo on about two weeks ago and can't seem to get any boost above 2psi and i'm running really rich. i've checked my charge pipes for leaks but didn't find any. could the intake side of turbo be restricting airflow? i'm using a cut short ram intake and filter with reducers to fit the turbo. if the filter was dirty would that make this big of a differance? today when i turned my car off after it sat i heard like a popping sound coming from the engine, is that detonation? could that be because it's running too rich?

correct me if I'm wrong(somebody)...but I think detonation occurs when ur running too lean, running rich affects(in a bad way) performance...I've never had detonation so I couldn't tell you what it sounds like, but I think(??) it happens when your car is running...

I believe that's your exahust making the popping noise. Everyone usually hears that after they turn their car off.

or it could be all that extra gas in the cyl just burning off...

no boost? hrm.. list ur setup and we might be able to help.

It is your car cooling down, not detonation. Detonation only happens when the car is running. It is due to running lean, high compression, advanced timing, poor cooling, or some combination. Can't happen if the car is off.

oops. I missed the "after i sat and watched" part. yah, its just metal contracting as it cools down. alluminum does that.

I thought you meant as soon as u turn it off.

my set-up is:
d16y8
t-25 wastgate set at 8psi
dsm intercooler
probe bov
cartech adjustable fmu
walbro 255 fuel pump
btm

it doesn't sound like the normal pinging that happens when you turn the engine off, it's more like a loud crack every so often. just doesn't sound good.
do you think i should try and find a differant filter for it? i want to find a filter with a smaller ID so it will fit my 2 1/2 inch pipes and i can get rid of the 3 inch pipe going to the 2 1/2.
anybody have any suggestions on the no boost problem? i tried using a MBC and it doesn't change anything.

A dirty filter isn't going to rob you of 6 psi. Double check the wastegate and check for vacuum leaks.

hey guys i have the same engine as him and when my car is off i hear more than just the regular "ping" noise from exhaust, i hear a more like a "crack", comes from valve cover and engine area.. is it because the turbo makes the engine hotter thus making the metal heat up and contract more strongly???? it seriously sounds like a crack but nothings bad happened... knock on wood

yeah like sounds kinda almost like cracking your knuckles but higher pitch or cracking your hips, chest back etc...

NO ONE HAS THIS SOUND???

i have this sound, but only in cool weather. no turbo either. its normal. dont worry about it. when its cold outside, it sounds like somebody is banging on my exhaust manifold with a wrench or something. sometimes its ------ LOUD, like every five seconds or so after i shut off my car. i think mine is louder though cuz my exhaust manifold is beat to ---- and old... i wouldn't worry about it guys, at least until your valve cover cracks in half...lol, just kidding. :P

no i don't think that the same thing because i've heard my exhaust ping before when it was cold but it was in the high 80's today and it wasn't just a ping, it was a LOUD ass crack.
but about my no boost prob, i think i'm gonna change out my wastgate this weekend to see if that's it. any other suggestions?

i think i might have found the cause to my no boost problem, i was looking at my turbo while the car was running (parked LOL)and i was hearing air coming from somewhere, so i started feeling around and felt a ---- load of air coming out from between my turbo and O2 housing. i guess the gasket material didn't hold up. could that make me only get 2psi????
