maybe you should spend some money on making it safe before turbo. a $700 GM prob needs another $700 in front end work. |
Re: deciding on size and trim
I'd say T3/T4 (B or E cover) with a smallish turbine wheel if you're looking for quick spool and good power at low boost. 68 trim may be a little small turbine wise, but 76 trim would probably be close to ideal.

Re: deciding on size and trim
How about a Holset for uber cheap power that's reliable? :D A nice HX35 or HY35 might do nicely and support that camaro engine for even more boost later on.

Re: deciding on size and trim
thanks for the help i think i might start looking for a holset or a 76 (or close to) trim t3/t4
i might find a decent one on craigslist or look in the junkyard any ideas of what cars (or trucks) might have similar sized turbo stock that i can pull at the junk yard if im not mistaking holsets are pretty common on diesel fords correct? and yeah the car needs a couple things before i boost it such as a new map sensor (i think stock is 2bar would i need to upgrade to a 3 bar or 2.5bar??) also it needs cv joints but im thinking about using the larger stronger ones off of a gtp i have one stupid question is it a bad thing that the car uses both map and maf? |
Re: deciding on size and trim
Remember that the 76 trim is the turbine side, and is 76 trim T3, not T4. If you get a 76 trim compressor you'll have one big turbo. I'd say 50-60 trim T4 compressor. Problem with Holsets is they have a giant turbine housing and turbine wheel that are mated to a mediocre compressor wheel. For instance, the HX35. Usually the hotsides are in the 9-16cm range and the turbine is T4 sized, and all that turbine and you only get a 60mm compressor inducer. Don't get me wrong, 60mm compressor is great sized for a street/strip car, but the oversized turbine aspects really take from the turbocharger's characteristics. You can get a t3/to4e with a 76 trim turbine and a 55-62mm compressor, so you get Holset compressor capabilities without the turbine wheel meant for a large diesel engine. The only thing Holset has going for them is 60mm compressor inducer for $200>, but IMO that's still not worth it unless you're on a major budget and then it's a viable option.

Re: deciding on size and trim
a guy i know makes kits for that engine..
he uses a T04b P trim with a .64 AR with a T04E 57 trim compressor www.cartuning.ca im not suggesting you buy the kit... but that compo is infriggincredible my set up for my 4.3 (similar to your 3800 in many ways) t31 (dont know the wheel trim) .82 AR T04B H3 compressor the T31 might be too small for over 5000 RPM but for my setup its perfect (for now lol) |

(max power wise??) i mean they made like 296whp and 400+wft-lbs but i don't know how long the engine will last making that much power and this is my daily driver tho i have had the idea in the back of my head for about a minute to buy a 90-93 integra or like 89-92 civic and driving that while i turbo the intrigue and then when turboing that is done i could throw like a b16 in the honda and turbo making it a track car or a barely street legal track car (out of that i would like mid to low 11's but thats just an idea i have been tossing arround) |
